Brendan Rodgers expressed his remorse for the disappointment he caused the Celtic supporters when he departed the club during his previous tenure. He acknowledged the animosity surrounding his move to Leicester in February 2019 and emphasized his determination to win over those who may still have reservations about his return to Parkhead. Speaking to the media on Friday, Rodgers addressed the issue for the first time since assuming the role as Ange Postecoglou's successor on Monday.
"I empathize with the sentiments of the supporters and I can relate to the fact that even during my successful first tenure here, I faced criticism.
Given the intense emotions surrounding that period, especially with the club aiming for a record-breaking tenth consecutive victory, I genuinely hope that I can maintain a positive rapport with the supporters."
"I experienced a sense of sadness upon my departure, which was only natural. While I have no personal regrets about my decision, I do feel remorse for the pain it inflicted upon others, and this is precisely why I find myself in this situation today.
"As someone who supports Celtic, I fully comprehended the significance of my actions," he further explained. "My regret lies in the fact that I caused distress to fellow Celtic fans, and this played a significant role in my decision to return."
I aim to remain composed in my expression of emotions, and during my tenure here, I aspire to replicate the impact I made during my initial experience.
The level of anticipation and stress is heightened this time around, owing to our previous accomplishments and my departure. However, this is precisely what I desired and the reason I have chosen to be here. I am determined to embrace these expectations and pressures.
"I am driven by the desire to succeed and by the unwavering support I have received from the moment I left. Now that I have returned, I am immensely grateful to those who have stood by me. As for those who may have doubts about my presence, I hope to change their perspective through the captivating football we display and the triumphs we achieve."
