Breaking: The Last of Us Fans in for a Devastating Surprise by Naughty Dog

Naughty Dog delivers disappointing news to devoted fans of The Last of Us, dampening excitement for the highly anticipated annual celebration of this beloved post-apocalyptic series

Highlights

Naughty Dog will not discuss future The Last of Us projects at the ten-year anniversary event, making it a disappointing occasion for some fans.

The upcoming event, The Last of Us Day, will primarily feature merchandise, art, and miscellaneous announcements, leaving fans who were anticipating game or TV show updates feeling disappointed. Unfortunately, due to the delay of the multiplayer spin-off and the ongoing WGA strike, Naughty Dog is unable to share new content, including Season 2 promos of the HBO show.

Naughty Dog has announced that they will not be discussing any upcoming projects related to The Last of Us during the series' upcoming ten-year anniversary event. This confirms that the 2023 edition of The Last of Us Day will have a more somber tone.

Previously known as Outbreak Day, The Last of Us Day is an annual event dedicated to celebrating Naughty Dog's popular post-apocalyptic franchise. Despite the series already reaching its ten-year milestone in June, The Last of Us Day will once again be observed on September 26, the day that marks the peak of the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak in the game's lore. The past two iterations of this event have garnered significant attention, particularly due to the release of teasers for the first season of The Last of Us TV show.

No significant reveals are expected this time around. Naughty Dog has confirmed that the 2023 The Last of Us Day stream will not discuss future games or the second season of the HBO show. Instead, the broadcast, scheduled for 9 a.m. PT on September 26, will focus on The Last of Us merchandise, art, and miscellaneous announcements, according to the Sony-owned studio. Disappointed fans have already taken to social media to express their feelings about the event agenda.

However, the limited scope of the broadcast is not surprising. The Last of Us multiplayer spin-off was delayed in May, making a September reveal unlikely. Additionally, the follow-up to the inaugural season of the HBO show has not yet entered production due to the ongoing WGA strike.

The Last of Us showrunner, Craig Mazin, has confirmed that the second season of the TV adaptation will begin production once the strike concludes, likely in the later part of autumn. Consequently, Naughty Dog is unable to release any Season 2 promos during the celebratory stream, as there is currently no material to showcase.

Additionally, apart from these projects, it is rumored that the Sony subsidiary is also in the early stages of developing The Last of Us 3, as hinted by series creator Neil Druckmann. However, even if the game has entered pre-production, it is still several years away from being released. Therefore, it is unlikely to be officially confirmed until the developer is prepared to divulge more information regarding its forthcoming multiplayer spin-off.
