The Pokemon Company has announced that the 2024 Pokemon World Championships tournament will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii. This highly anticipated annual e-sports event brings together top players from around the world to compete in various Pokemon games, including the mainline games, the Pokemon TCG, and Pokemon GO. After being hosted in Japan for the 2023 iteration, the event is returning to the United States, specifically to Hawaii, in 2024. In addition to intense competition, the closing ceremonies of the 2023 event featured exciting announcements, such as the introduction of new Pokemon for Pokemon Unite, updates on the DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and the unveiling of Hawaii as the location for the 2024 Championship.
The location was showcased in a brief video at the event, which was also shared on the official Pokemon social media accounts. The video starts with imagery of Hawaiian foliage and then pans to reveal a Pikachu mascot wearing a Hawaiian shirt. A representative then announces that The Pokemon Company will be hosting the World Championships in Honolulu, the capital city of Hawaii. This choice of location is fitting since Hawaii served as the primary inspiration for the Alola region in the Pokemon Sun and Moon games.
Acknowledging the ongoing devastating wildfire in the state, the Pokemon franchise's social media account mentioned that the fires are affecting the Maui area. To support the relief efforts, the company pledged to donate $200,000 to its partner, GlobalGiving, through the Hawaii Wildfire Relief Fund. The post also encourages fans to contribute and help the people of Hawaii by providing a link to learn more.
Numerous Pokemon enthusiasts offered their support to the wildfire-affected individuals, particularly those residing in the affected region. Although a few voiced concerns regarding the potential negative influence of tourism on the residents' quality of life, several Hawaii-based fans displayed their enthusiasm for the upcoming Pokemon World Championships taking place in their home state.
