Paul Pogba has received confirmation of a positive result in the counter-analysis of a second sample, substantiating his earlier anti-doping violation. Following his misconduct, the ex-Manchester United midfielder was placed under provisional suspension on September 11 of this year.
Pogba, the French international, was found positive for testosterone in a random drugs test conducted after Juventus' Serie A match against Udinese on August 20. Despite being an unused substitute at the time, Pogba's counter-analysis also confirmed the presence of the hormone. As a result, he now faces the possibility of a suspension lasting up to four years.
We News have contacted Pogba's representatives for comment.
Pogba has been suspended by Italy's national anti-doping tribunal after news that he had returned an adverse sample appeared in September.
After the initial positive sample, Pogba's representative, Rafaela Pimenta, released a statement to We News stating, "We cannot comment until the counter-analysis is complete. However, it is certain that Paul Pogba never had any intention of violating the rules."
The player's unfortunate history with injuries continues as he receives yet another blow. After rejoining Juventus from Manchester United just over a year ago, this news comes as another setback. His participation in last year's World Cup final for France was hindered by a knee injury, and he was only able to play in a mere six Serie A matches for Juventus last season.
Pogba has not yet begun a game in the current season but has featured twice as a substitute, with his most recent appearance being in the 2-0 victory against Empoli.
Moreover, there has been an ongoing police investigation in France regarding allegations of extortion against Pogba, in which his older brother, Mathias, has denied any involvement.
This is yet another setback for Juventus, as they have had a troubled season with investigations into financial misconduct and improper disclosure of salary payments. As a consequence of these legal matters, UEFA has banned the Turin club from participating in European competitions this year.
