Celtic secures Melbourne City forward Marco Tilio on a five-year deal, pending international clearance With nine A-League goals last season, Tilio strengthens Brendan Rodgers' squad as they embark on their championship defense against Ross County Stay updated on Celtic's summer transfers and follow their journey with Sky Sports

Celtic has confirmed the acquisition of Marco Tilio on a five-year contract, pending international clearance. The talented 21-year-old winger, who previously played for Sydney FC, has joined the team from A-League champions Melbourne City, where he had been playing since 2020.

"I am thrilled to be making the move to Europe and joining such a prestigious club and team like Celtic. I am extremely excited about this opportunity."

"My aim is to utilize my skills to take on opponents in and around the penalty area, assist my teammates in scoring goals, and, hopefully, find the back of the net myself."

The opportunity is incredible for me, as I have witnessed Australians excel at that renowned club. It is an immense opportunity that I could not turn down. Additionally, having been in the company of Aaron Mooy and Tommy Rogic during recent national team camps, it certainly facilitated my decision.

The Australian international is adept at playing on either wing and can also serve as a central forward. Signing him would make him the second addition to manager Brendan Rodgers' roster since his return to the club. Tilio, who played for Melbourne City, contributed with a total of nine goals in the A-League during the previous season in which his team emerged as champions.

"It has been my long-standing goal since relocating to Melbourne three years ago," he remarked.

"I had intended to excel there and eventually move on to more ambitious opportunities. Now, I believe the moment has come for me to pursue challenges in Europe and truly push my limits."

Rodgers: A good time to strengthen

We News understands the club's board will back Brendan Rodgers in the transfer market to help him deliver domestic success and compete in the Champions League.

Celtic have recently secured the signature of midfielder Odin Thiago Holm on a lucrative five-year contract. This marks the first signing made by Rodgers since his return to Glasgow, with the Parkhead manager expressing a strong desire for more acquisitions to bolster the squad. "Now is the opportune moment to reinforce our ranks, given our recent successes," he stated. "However, the focus will not solely be on quantity."

What is Celtic's schedule?

Over the past few years, a squad has been assembled, making it imperative to nurture and enhance its abilities. I am genuinely enthused by the presence of these players as they comprise a youthful team with ample room for development and progress.

The Celtic players will commence pre-season training at the club's Lennoxtown base before departing for Japan in July. Their first matches will be against Ange Postecoglou's former club Yokohama F Marinos on July 19, followed by a match against Gamba Osaka on July 22.

Rodgers' team will proceed to South Korea, where they will face Wolves at the Suwon World Cup Stadium on July 26th. The defending champions, Celtic, will start their title defense at home against Ross County in the first match of the 2023/24 Scottish Premiership season on Saturday, August 5th, which will be broadcast live on We.

In his first month back at Celtic Park, Brendan Rodgers will face Ross County, Aberdeen, and St Johnstone as he aims to replicate Ange Postecoglou's success in winning a treble last season. The highly anticipated Old Firm match will take place on September 3 at Ibrox, with Rangers visiting Parkhead on December 30. Both of these matches will be broadcast live on We. The third meeting between the two Glasgow rivals is scheduled for April 6.
