James Gunn has provided some disappointing updates for fans eagerly anticipating The Suicide Squad 2. He has clarified the situation regarding the team after the release of the 2021 film. The year 2023 will mark the end of the DCEU, and DC Studios, alongside Gunn and Peter Safran, are focusing on the development of the new DC Universe. While they are rebooting the DC Universe, certain elements from the DCEU will still be incorporated into the new franchise, including some of Gunn's characters from The Suicide Squad. However, it remains unclear whether DC Studios have plans for The Suicide Squad 2, especially considering Gunn's increased involvement in the franchise. During an appearance on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Gunn avoided directly answering questions about the future of The Suicide Squad 2. Instead, he discussed the inclusion of characters from Peacemaker and emphasized that there is currently no progress on a sequel.
Waller is first and Waller is a lot of the same people from Peacemaker. [When asked about if The Suicide Squad 2 would happen] No.
The Suicide Squad's Canceled Plans & Spin-Off Explained
Despite The Suicide Squad being better received critically than Suicide Squad, the studio did not give the green light to The Suicide Squad 2, likely due to its underperformance at the box office, which was negatively impacted by its release during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Gunn's remarks, if The Suicide Squad 2 had been approved, it would not have simply focused on assembling a new version of the team. Only time will reveal Gunn's true intentions until he provides further elaboration.
The DC Universe is undergoing a reboot, leaving fans curious about how Waller and Peacemaker will be incorporated into the new continuity as Viola Davis and John Cena reprise their roles from the DCEU. It is expected that Waller in season 1 and Peacemaker in season 2 will be slightly tweaked versions of their characters, while retaining most of their history from the DCEU. There may be some minor changes after The Flash events, but it is unlikely that Amanda and Peacemaker will undergo drastic transformations.
It wouldn't be surprising if The Suicide Squad 2 is put on hold because DC Studios wants to reimagine Task Force X in the DC Universe. When the time is right, this will give director Gunn a fresh start without needing to create a soft sequel, as he did after taking over from David Ayer. However, for now, it is certain that The Suicide Squad 2 will not be happening anytime soon.
