The Spider Within, a short film centered around Miles Morales, has received an official synopsis ahead of its upcoming premiere at a film festival.
The film delves into Miles' challenges as a teenager, companion, and learner, all in the context of him being the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man of Brooklyn.
As an installment of Sony's LENS program, the short film highlights an alternative storytelling approach, emphasizing the distinctiveness of the Spider-Verse.
The Spider-Verse franchise, known for its origin story of the popular superhero Miles Morales, is currently on hiatus. However, fans are eagerly anticipating the screening of a short film called The Spider Within at a prestigious film festival. This film provides an official synopsis and hints at an undisclosed commercial release date. The Spider-Verse films not only delve into Miles Morales' journey but also explore the vast world of alternate Spider-People that have captivated Marvel comic book readers for years. The franchise has already released two films, Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, and is planning to continue the story with a third installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The screening of The Spider Within, which focuses on Miles Morales, took place at France's Annecy International Film Festival during the release window of the second film.
While it has been revealed that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse might face delays due to the ongoing strikes, fans of the film’s protagonist can find solace in some good news. Prior to its debut at the Animation Is Film Festival on October 21st, an official synopsis for The Spider Within has been released. "Miles Morales, as a teenager, faces the daunting challenge of juggling his responsibilities as a student, friend, and Brooklyn's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. After enduring a particularly taxing day trying to balance these pressures, Miles finds himself caught in the grip of a panic attack. This moment compels him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety, teaching him that seeking help can be an act of bravery as significant as protecting his city from villainous forces," reads the description on the event website.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse offered different versions, but The Spider Within stands as a self-contained episode in Miles' life, allowing fans to gain a better understanding of his struggles. "The Spider Within is the initial short film produced under Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks's new LENS (Leading and Empowering New Storytellers) program," noted Animation is Film. The program aims to connect emerging filmmakers from underrepresented groups with creative and executive leaders to create a short film using an existing pipeline from an upcoming feature film.
It is important to note that the Spider-Verse deviates from the MCU Multiverse, granting the opportunity for diverse styles of storytelling, character development, and projects that may not align with the mainline Marvel films and shows. The Spider Within epitomizes this difference, with its unique format and delayed general release. Although there is no confirmed public release date for the short film, fans can expect a departure from the norm, particularly as it delves into a potentially more vulnerable side of Miles' character.
Fan excitement for the movie will surely increase with the possibility of briefly revisiting Miles' world. However, it is important to acknowledge that Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse reportedly encountered chaos during its production, raising concerns about the extensive and costly portrayal of Miles' story. Although the current strike affecting most productions is expected to resolve soon, these concerns should be taken seriously. The general release date for The Spider Within is currently unknown.
