Paul Merson believes Tottenham should not decline Bayern Munich's upcoming £94.6m offer for Harry Kane. However, he cautions that if the English captain departs, Spurs will no longer be considered a top-10 team. Tottenham should not ignore this financial opportunity, especially considering Kane's one-year contract remaining and the possibility of him leaving the club as a free agent thereafter.
Although he is already 30 years old, I don't consider that to be significant. Based on his playing style, I believe he can continue playing until the ages of 35 or 36 without difficulty. His performance is not dependent on speed alone; his intelligence on the field is on par with anyone else.
Even now, I remain surprised and unable to understand why Manchester United did not acquire him. If they had, they would have benefited from his contributions for a solid period of four or five years, and most likely secured victory in the Premier League.
There is no alternative - it's unlikely they will release him for free next season. Regardless of who you are and considering the current times - and acknowledging the substantial funds in the Premier League - it would be foolish to decline this opportunity.
Is it plausible for this Tottenham team to secure a place in the top four next season? I would be surprised. Therefore, it's not as if retaining him guarantees a top-four finish. So, whatever we may lose by selling him, it will be compensated through participation in the Champions League. However, that will not be the situation.
Why was Chelsea not a possibility for him? His future destination is open for him to choose next summer, depending on the current circumstances. Is he still at his current club with the possibility of being transferred to other clubs? So, can Kane say: I'll stay quiet and disadvantage you by leaving to sign with Chelsea? Mauricio Pochettino is also associated with them.
Considering that Manchester United just spent £72m on Rasmus Hojlund, they are unlikely to pursue the purchase of Harry Kane. The pressure on this player will be significant if he fails to deliver. The only scenario in which he could join Manchester City is if Tottenham asks for Julian Alvarez in exchange, as he is known for scoring goals.
Kane's impressive record of scoring 30 goals last season was overshadowed by Spurs' disappointing performance. It's hard not to sympathize with Ange Postecoglou, considering the team's current situation. If he remains, there's a slim chance they might secure a spot in the top four, whereas if he leaves, they would struggle to even make it to the top half of the table. In fact, without him, they would undoubtedly be a bottom half team. The question remains, who will step up and score the goals? Considering their eighth-place finish last season, it's evident that reinforcements are needed. Although James Maddison is a talented player, Leicester's relegation raises concerns about his ability to elevate a team's performance.
Wolves playing dangerous game, I don't see them staying up
A lot of the owners in the bottom half of the Premier League table are taking a chance.
They are contemplating the upcoming matches against Luton and Sheffield United and pondering: "If we are superior to them, why should we invest £100m in wages and pay £100,000 per week?"
This is the issue with Wolves; they are offloading various players without acquiring any replacements. My only assumption is that they believe they must outperform Luton and Sheffield United. However, this strategy is quite risky.
Based on the current situation, it is unlikely that Wolves will avoid relegation. However, if Gary O'Neil is brought in, he would be capable of performing well. It would be advantageous to appoint someone with Premier League experience, similar to yesterday's manager. This way, they would be familiar with the teams.
It would not be ideal to recruit someone from abroad who would need time to adapt. In contrast, Gary already has knowledge of all the players, even though he may not have previously worked with them but has played against them. On the other hand, another candidate might require six months to settle in and by Christmas, the team could be facing relegation.
