Blake Lively didn’t intend to hurt anyone with her Betty Buzz ad that appeared to make fun of Princess Kate Middleton's photoshopping skills before her cancer diagnosis.
"I know it may not matter now, but I want to address this," Lively, 36, shared on her Instagram Story on Friday, March 22. "I made a lighthearted post during the 'photoshop fails' craze, and now I feel really embarrassed about it. I apologize. Sending love and good thoughts to everyone, always."
Lively promoted her Betty Buzz company’s new mocktails by sharing a photo on Instagram on Friday, March 15. In the now-deleted picture, the actress appeared lounging poolside, holding a can of Betty Booze. The image was clearly edited, with Lively's head placed on the body of an older woman.
She wrote in the caption, “Excited to announce our 4 new @bettybuzz & @bettybooze products with this photo I just took today. That's why I've been MIA lately.”
Lively's fans believed it was a clear nod to Kate's recent photo editing controversy. Kate's location was unknown after her stomach surgery in January until she finally spoke out to celebrate U.K.'s Mother's Day on March 10.
Kate expressed her gratitude for the kind messages and ongoing support she received during the past two months. She shared a photo of her three children with Prince William: Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, wishing everyone a Happy Mother's Day.
Several international news agencies refused to distribute the photo, stating that "the source has manipulated the image." Hours after the image was shared.
The following day, Kate admitted to altering the image.
An X post shared on Monday, March 11 via the official Prince and Princess of Wales account mentioned that like many amateur photographers, there is an occasional interest in experimenting with editing. The post also included an apology for any confusion caused by the family photograph shared the day before. The message concluded with well wishes for a happy Mother's Day to all celebrating.
After days of speculation about Kate's whereabouts and well-being, it was revealed on Friday, March 22 that she had been quietly battling cancer.
In January, I had a major abdominal surgery in London. Initially, it was believed that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery went well, but later tests revealed the presence of cancer. I shared this information in a video on Friday. My medical team recommended that I undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, which I have now started.
Learning about the cancer was a big shock for me and my family. My husband William and I have been trying our best to deal with this news privately, for the sake of our children.
"We kindly ask for your understanding as we, as a family, require some time, space, and privacy for me to focus on completing my treatment," she explained. "Working has always brought me immense happiness, and I eagerly anticipate returning once I am able. However, at this moment, my main priority is to concentrate on making a full recovery."
Editor's P/S:
Blake Lively's sincere apology for her previous post highlights the importance of empathy and sensitivity in online discourse. While her initial intent may have been lighthearted, it is crucial to be mindful of the potential impact of our actions on others, especially those who may be facing personal challenges. Lively's admission of feeling embarrassed and her apology demonstrate her understanding of the need to be respectful and considerate, even in seemingly innocuous situations.
The article also sheds light on the privacy and well-being of public figures. The revelation of Princess Kate's recent cancer diagnosis and her request for privacy serve as a reminder that even those in the spotlight deserve the same respect and understanding that we would offer to anyone facing a health crisis. It is important to respect their boundaries and give them the space they need to focus on their recovery and well-being, without unnecessary speculation or intrusion.
