In response to claims that the Blade script draft had diminished the titular vampire-hunter's role to fourth lead in the film, a writer involved in the project has dismissed such suggestions on social media.
This week, Marvel enthusiasts have been startled by reports of turmoil within the MCU. Rumors have circulated about deceased Avengers making a comeback to revive the franchise's fortunes. Additionally, concerns have emerged over Jonathan Majors' domestic assault charge and imminent trial, leading to speculation about Doctor Doom taking over from Kang the Conqueror in the spotlight.
The Blade movie, featuring Mahershala Ali, was rumored to have a budget of less than $100 million, which is half the usual cost for recent Marvel films. Additionally, the initial script hinted at Blade being the fourth lead, with women taking center stage. However, one of the writers involved has denied this claim.
Blade writer hits back at claims character was set to be “fourth lead” in movie
As per a comprehensive article in Variety discussing the MCU, an individual familiar with Blade disclosed that, at a certain stage, the storyline transformed into one centered around women and imbued with valuable life lessons. Consequently, Blade was relegated to the position of the fourth lead.
In a recent Twitter/X post, Michael Starburry, the screenwriter, retaliated saying, "During the strike, I contributed to a draft of this script. However, I have never come across a version where Blade was portrayed as the fourth lead or where the story was 'narrative led by women and filled with life lessons'. Nevertheless, I acknowledge that numerous changes could have occurred after my involvement. Blade appeared in nearly all the scripts I had the opportunity to work on."
Starrbury received a message from someone asking, "Why should we watch Blade if it's not about Blade?" Starrbury replied, "When I was involved, Blade was present in nearly every scene. I'm not sure what happened, but I highly doubt he was ever considered a supporting character in any version of the script."
Regardless of the details, it is expected that Blade will begin filming in 2024 and be released as part of the studio's Phase Five in 2025.

As a Gen Z netizen, I have mixed feelings about the Blade movie controversy. On the one hand, I am excited to see a new Blade movie, especially one starring Mahershala Ali. I think he is a great actor and I believe he will bring a lot to the role. On the other hand, I am concerned about the reports that Blade has been relegated to a fourth lead in his own movie. I think it is important for Blade to be the central character in his own movie, and I am worried that he will be overshadowed by the other characters.
I am also concerned about the reports that the movie will be "narrative led by women and filled with life lessons." I think it is important for movies to have strong female characters, but I do not want to see Blade take a backseat to them. I want to see Blade be the hero of his own movie, and I do not want him to be overshadowed by the other characters.
Overall, I am cautiously optimistic about the Blade movie. I am excited to see Mahershala Ali in the role, but I am concerned about the reports that he has been relegated to a fourth lead. I hope that the movie will be able to balance the strong female characters with Blade's role as the hero of the movie.
