In the recently revealed Xbox leak, an email from Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has surfaced. In the email, Spencer expressed his view that acquiring Nintendo would be a significant milestone in his career. Additionally, he mentioned Warner Bros. Interactive and Valve as potential companies to consider for acquisition. Prior to this, other documents had suggested that Microsoft had contemplated acquiring Bungie, Square Enix, and Sega.
The Verge has recently discovered an email dated August 6, 2020, where Spencer responds to Microsoft marketing executives Takeshi Numoto and Chris Capossela in an email thread titled "random thought." In the email, Spencer expresses that Nintendo is of great significance to Microsoft in the gaming industry. He mentions that he has already engaged in multiple discussions with Nintendo's leadership team regarding a more closely coordinated partnership between the two companies. Additionally, he states that Microsoft is likely the best-positioned US company to establish a successful relationship with Nintendo. Notably, Microsoft and Nintendo have recently entered into a 10-year agreement to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo, contingent upon the completion of Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
However, it is highly unlikely that Nintendo will be completely bought out, at least not in the near future.
Spencer acknowledged that Nintendo has a significant amount of money, thanks to the enormous success of the Nintendo Switch. Therefore, they might not be open to the idea of being acquired by Microsoft. Nonetheless, Spencer mentioned that Mason Morfit from ValueAct, a former Microsoft Board of Director member, has been purchasing Nintendo shares. This acquisition could potentially offer opportunities for Microsoft, according to Spencer.
Spencer expressed doubt regarding the possibility of acquiring Nintendo, stating that without some form of collaboration with Morfit, he did not foresee a feasible near-term merge between Nintendo and Microsoft. He also emphasized that pursuing a hostile takeover would not be a favorable strategy, so they are focusing on a long-term approach.
Nevertheless, Spencer revealed that Microsoft's Board of Directors had thoroughly assessed Nintendo and Valve, and they are completely supportive of exploring potential opportunities with either company, just like himself.
Spencer mentioned that Microsoft was actively engaged in discussions to purchase Warner Bros. Interactive and ZeniMax at the time. Microsoft successfully acquired ZeniMax for $7.5 billion, but the deal with Warner Bros. Interactive (now Warner Bros. Games) did not materialize.
In addition, the Xbox leak unveiled images of an Xbox handheld device, a mid-gen Xbox console, and future consoles beyond that. It also revealed unannounced games like Red Dead Redemption II for next-gen consoles and Dishonored 3, among others. However, it is important to consider that these documents may be outdated and not reflective of Microsoft's current plans. Stay updated on Our Website for the latest news.
