Article Key Points

Act 2 of Baldur's Gate 3 features some of the toughest fights in the game, with a higher level of difficulty and complexity compared to Acts 1 and 3.

The Githyanki Creche presents players with a formidable battle, as they must withstand the attacks of ruthless Githyanki fighters. However, caution is warranted, as failing a Persuasion check may result in Lae'zel turning against the party.

The difficulty of the Balthazar fight can be mitigated by utilizing the Gauntlet of Shar, as engaging him in the Shadowfell exposes additional challenges due to his formidable necrotic and translocation abilities.

In Baldur's Gate 3, players will encounter deadly enemies to battle. However, certain fights are known to be tougher than others. In the first act of the game, most fights are designed for lower-level characters or inexperienced players who may not be familiar with D&D lore or turn-based combat.

As players progress to Act 2, they should be at least level 5 or 6, and the difficulty level significantly increases. Act 2 showcases some of the most challenging fights in the game, often surpassing the complexity of those in Acts 1 & 3. The outcome of quests, rivalries, and storylines can often be determined by the success or failure in these fights, as the party advances towards Baldur's Gate.

Some of the battles that follow are contingent upon the decisions made by players during Act 1, and the majority of these engagements will significantly impact the storyline during Act 3. Familiarizing oneself with these conflicts may inadvertently reveal certain narrative and plot elements. It is recommended to exercise caution before proceeding further.

6. The Githyanki Creche

Fail A Roll And Fight Lae'zel

Baldur's Gate 3: Epic Battles in Act 2

Following their escape from the Illithid ship, Lae'zel has been persistent in claiming that the nearby Githyanki outpost possesses a means to rid the party of the tadpole. Situated beneath the remains of the Temple of Lathander in the Mountain zone, the crèche is the designated location.

Upon arrival, the Githyanki will aggressively demand the Artifact from the protagonist. Should they choose to withhold it, the ensuing battle will prove to be one of the most formidable challenges in the game. Complicating matters further, failing a Persuasion check will cause even Lae'zel to turn against the party, leading to a treacherous three-player confrontation against a group of highly skilled Githyanki warriors.

5. Balthazar The Necromancer

Change Venues To Make This Fight Easier

Baldur's Gate 3: Epic Battles in Act 2

In the Gauntlet of Shar, Balthazar seeks the assistance of the protagonist in the quest to locate the enigmatic weapon, the Nightsong, which has been sought after by everyone since Act 1. If their conversation proves fruitful, the player reconnects with Balthazar in the confines of the Shadowfell, where the Nightsong remains captive.

If players decide not to hand Dame Aylin over to Balthazar, they will be forced to battle him without Aylin's assistance. The arena chosen for this fight, combined with Balthazar's necrotic and translocation abilities, make it a highly challenging encounter. Balthazar's minions strategically position themselves in elevated locations while he teleports unpredictably, summoning the undead and shrouding the area in Darkness.

To significantly increase their chances of success, players can choose to initiate the confrontation in the Gauntlet of Shar instead of waiting until they reach the Shadowfell. This allows them to face both Balthazar and his minions in a single room where teleportation becomes nearly ineffective.

4. Yurgir, The Orthon

A Dangerous Demon With A Variety Of Minions

Baldur's Gate 3: Epic Battles in Act 2

This optional battle offers a range of difficulty levels, contingent upon the player's luck during a pair of challenging Persuasion checks. There is the opportunity to rescue Yurgir from his contractual obligations instead of engaging in combat. Moreover, if he manages to survive, Yurgir reappears in Act 3 to provide assistance in the fight against Raphael.

However, the player is required to kill him as part of a deal made with Raphael to unravel the inscription on Astarion's back in The Pale Elf quest. Players who care about their approval ratings or romantic options with Astarion should only engage in a brief conversation with Yurgir to convince him to eliminate his own construct minions.

Although Astarion will still disapprove, it becomes insignificant as long as the Orthon is killed by the end of the conversation. The only remaining task is to fight Yurgir, who has a penchant for throwing explosives while remaining invisible, and his Displacer Beast companion, known for its ferocious bite and teleportation abilities.

3. Defending Halsin's Portal

It's Tough, But Do It For Him

Baldur's Gate 3: Epic Battles in Act 2

This encounter is distinct as it focuses on defending a strategic location rather than defeating a boss. It serves as the final stage in the quest to revive the Shadow-Cursed Lands and break the curse, making it one of the most challenging battles in the game.

The party must hold the portal for a few turns, waiting for Halsin to save Thaniel. However, due to the intense battle and the overwhelming number of targets, it feels like a long time. To turn the tides in this challenging fight, crowd control, turn undead, daylight, and any area-of-effect spells that can eliminate multiple enemies at once can make all the difference.

2. Moonrise Towers

Taking Back The Shadow-Cursed Lands

Baldur's Gate 3: Epic Battles in Act 2

Upon liberating the Nightsong from its prison in the Shadowfell, players have the option to regroup with Jahiera and her remaining forces in Reithwin Town. Their objective: launching an assault on Moonrise Towers. The party and their allies must prepare for a challenging battle, facing various enemies. The entryway poses a vulnerability, with snipers positioned above and spellcasters lurking below, ready to unleash area-of-effect attacks.

To facilitate the fight, one strategy is to guide the party towards an alternate, smaller entrance located to the south. This approach necessitates passing an Intimidation or Persuasion check. However, it grants the party the advantage of sneaking up on the numerous forces congregated in the lobby while Jaheria leads the attack from the front.

1. Gerringothe Thorm

Shielded By Precious Metal And Poltergeists

Baldur's Gate 3: Epic Battles in Act 2

In case the Persuasion, Deception, or Intimidation rolls are unsuccessful, it is possible to convince any of the Thorm siblings to meet their demise willingly rather than engaging in a fight. Among them, Gerringothe, protected by several layers of solid gold, is the most formidable. With her immense strength resembling a moving train, she inflicts devastating blows while remaining almost impervious to harm, thanks to her otherworldly minions.

To defeat Gerringothe, one must destroy the protective skulls scattered in different locations within the Tollhouse. This task may be challenging due to its complexities. Furthermore, it is important to note that the piles of gold present in the vicinity can trigger explosions and spawn additional adversaries. Hence, it is advisable to collect as much gold as possible before confronting Gerringothe in combat. This strategy is crucial in Baldur's Gate 3.
