Highlights
Monks in Baldur's Gate 3 can use cold spells and abilities like Blade of Rime to deal damage and create useful effects like freezing surfaces and putting out fires.
In the Underdark, players have the opportunity to discover the Mourning Frost weapon. This weapon enhances the abilities of spellcasters by granting them access to cold-based spells and powers such as Heart of Ice, which bestows cold damage bonuses and induces chilling effects. Notable spells include Sleet Storm and Ice Storm, which create stormy conditions capable of extinguishing flames, freezing surfaces, and interrupting spellcasting. Additionally, spells like Chill of the Mountain and Ray of Frost deal cold damage while also slowing down adversaries.
In Baldur's Gate 3, players have multiple options for dealing cold damage, extending beyond the typical frost spellcasting build. In addition to Wizards and Sorcerers, Monks can also harness the power of frost and ice. These spells not only provide effective combat damage, but also offer practical applications in non-combat situations. The Sword Coast environment poses many dangers, and adventurers may find it necessary to find respite. Whether it's freezing lava lakes, hindering charging foes, or extinguishing fires, the diverse cold spells and associated abilities in BG3 can be utilized in various ways.
8 Blade Of Rime
Only Monks who practice the Way of the Four Elements can utilize this spell. As an Action, the Monk spends two Ki points to hurl a fragment of ice towards a target, inflicting 1d10 piercing damage upon impact.
Additionally, an Area of Effect effect occurs upon the shard striking its target. The explosion emanates cold energy, causing 2d6 cold damage to individuals within close proximity. This spell also manifests an icy surface, allowing players to extinguish fires or freeze water-covered surfaces.
7 Heart Of Ice
Players seeking a spellcaster character who specializes in cooling abilities should obtain Mourning Frost, a weapon concealed deep within the Underdark. Venturing into this perilous realm, players will stumble upon three fragments of a staff. Once combined, these fragments form a powerful two-handed weapon that bestows additional cold-based spells and abilities, including the coveted Heart of Ice.
Whenever the wielder of Mourning Frost inflicts cold damage, whether through spells or the staff's blunt force, they receive a bonus of +1 to their cold damage. Furthermore, the staff possesses the useful ability of Insidious Cold, which causes the target to become Chilled.
6 Sleet Storm
This Conjuration spell, known as Sleet Storm, may not inflict cold damage, but it encompasses all the expected effects by players in BG3. It necessitates Concentration and lasts for 10 turns, maintaining the storm.
Sleet Storm extinguishes fires, freezes damp surfaces, and disrupts the concentration of spellcasters within its reach. Its area of effect is substantial enough for the party to pass through, if necessary.
5 Chill Of The Mountain
Another exclusive ability of Monks from the Way of the Four Elements is a spell that can only be utilized by them. This particular spell only necessitates a single Ki point and inflicts 1d10 of cold damage. Additionally, it summons a chilling mountain breeze that hinders the target's movement, along with causing elemental harm.
Within this subclass, there are several other advantageous ice-related abilities. One such ability is the spell called Shaping of the Ice. While it does not cause any damage, it enables the character to create a solid ice cube that can be manipulated, thrown, or utilized for climbing purposes.
4 Ice Storm
This popular AoE spell, commonly found in tabletop versions of Dungeons & Dragons, can be learned by Wizards, Druids, and Sorcerers at level 4 in Baldur's Gate 3. Rather than a snowstorm, it unleashes a tempest of ice and hail upon all nearby individuals, causing significant damage. The spell inflicts 4d6 of cold damage and 2d8 of bludgeoning damage. Even if targets manage to make a saving throw, they still endure half the damage. The storm persists for two turns.
3 Hunger Of Hadar
Cold and necrotic damage blend harmoniously, so it comes as no surprise that Warlocks possess a spell that combines the eerie presence of Eldritch tentacles with a chilling aftermath. Hailing from the Conjuration school, this spell generates a frigid mist, enveloping foes, impairing their vision, and obstructing their movement with treacherous terrain.
However, beyond its primary effect of inflicting 2D6 cold damage over a span of ten enduring turns, this ominous void holds the potential to unleash an additional 2D6 acid damage upon any unfortunate entities or individuals ensnared within its shadowy haze.
2 Ray Of Frost
Ray of Frost is a highly versatile spell available to Sorcerers and Wizards right from level one. It not only inflicts 1d10 damage on a single target but also effectively slows them down. This Evocation spell is not limited to just Sorcerers and Wizards; other BG3 subclasses like Arcane Tricksters and Eldritch Fighters can also eventually harness its power.
When casting Ray of Frost, the spellcaster summons a concentrated beam of icy white light from their hands directly towards the intended target. With a generous range of 18 meters, this spell becomes even more formidable at level 5, causing 2D8 damage.
1 Armour Of Agathys
The players often overlook the fact that this commonly used magical armor spell, popular among Warlocks, Clerics, and Eldritch Fighters, has the ability to inflict cold damage. Alongside its defensive powers, it provides the caster with an extra 5 hit points and deals 5 cold damage to any creature that lands a melee attack on them.
Crafted from spectral frost, the armor remains effective until the character takes a long rest. It is advisable to cast the spell early in the day, prior to the commencement of combat, rather than using up an Action in the midst of battle.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is available now for the PC and is slated for a September 6th release for PlayStation 5.
