Andre Braugher's publicist, Jennifer Allen, revealed that the Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor passed away on Monday, December 11, after privately battling lung cancer.
According to Allen, Braugher had been diagnosed a few months ago.
Us confirmed on Tuesday, December 12, that Braugher passed away after battling a brief illness. He was 61.
Braugher gained recognition from his role in Homicide: Life on the Street, winning two Emmy Awards. He later portrayed Captain Ray Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a show that aired for eight seasons on NBC and FOX, solidifying his character as a significant figure in LGBTQIA+ representation in the media. Braugher, who was nominated for two Emmys for his role on the show, acted alongside Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, and Stephanie Beatriz. In the wake of Braugher's passing, numerous cast members of Brooklyn Nine-Nine have shared heartfelt tributes to honor his memory.

"I will always cherish the guidance you provided me. I will always treasure the moments we shared laughter, because your laugh was truly one of a kind," Fumero, 41, expressed via Instagram on Wednesday, December 13, while sharing a series of throwback photos. "I will always hold dear the deep love and steadfast loyalty you showed towards your family. I will carry it with me every time I prioritize spending time with my own family."
She added, "I will never forget how you sent me photos of autumn trees in New Jersey because you knew how much I missed that time of year back east. I will always remember you affectionately calling me Melly Fumé. There is so much that I will cherish and remember. It was truly an honor to have been in your presence for a while, Sir. Rest in Peace, my friend."
Marc Evan Jackson, who portrayed Captain Holt's husband Kevin on TV, also expressed his grief at Braugher's passing.
"Andre brought a special touch to every moment he was part of, and it was a privilege to have had the chance to know and collaborate with him," Jackson, 53, expressed to Deadline. "My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family, and to all those who, like us, held a deep affection for him."

Jackson also shared a social media tribute to Braugher. “O Captain. My Captain,” he captioned a still of the characters embracing via X (formerly Twitter).
Braugher is survived by wife Ami Brabson and their three sons, as well as his brother, Charles Jennings, and his mother, Sally Braugher.
