Andre Braugher, the talented actor known for his Emmy-winning role in "Homicide: Life on the Street" and his comedic work in "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," passed away at the age of 61 on Monday after a short illness, according to his publicist Jennifer Allen. Braugher leaves behind a legacy of numerous film and television credits following his remarkable debut in the 1989 film "Glory," where he portrayed a compassionate soldier during the Civil War.
He then portrayed baseball legend Jackie Robinson in the TV movie "The Court-Martial of Jackie Robinson" before securing the lead role in "Homicide." Braugher earned an Emmy for his portrayal of detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC series.
Following this success, Braugher continued to be sought after, appearing in the thriller "Primal Fear," Spike Lee's "Get on the Bus," and the sci-fi thriller "Frequency." He then starred in his own series, "Gideon's Crossing," where he played a brilliant oncologist who mentors young doctors.

Braugher earned a second Emmy in 2006 for the FX miniseries "Thief," amassing 11 nominations overall.
He later starred in three seasons alongside Ray Romano in the series "Men of a Certain Age" before returning as Captain Ray Holt, another cop, in the comedy series "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," starring Andy Samberg, which ran for eight seasons. Braugher was nominated for an Emmy for both shows. Terry Crews, Braugher's co-star in "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," expressed his grief for the late actor on Instagram.
"I can't believe you're gone so soon. It was an honor to have known you, laughed with you, and worked with you for 8 glorious years, witnessing your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon," Crews wrote. "You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness, and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like."

Braugher, a Chicago native, graduated from Stanford University and later attended Juilliard. Throughout his career, he showcased his versatility by appearing on stage in the New York Shakespeare Festival and lending his voice to the villainous Darkseid in the animated film "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse."
Braughers wife, Ami Brabson, is also an actor. The two married in 1991.
