Highlights

Trick 'r Treat 2 is finally in active development after years of anticipation, with several drafts of a script and a stack of storyboards and concept art.

The original film's cult classic status, along with its enduring popularity and re-release in theaters, indicates that the sequel is likely to have a successful theatrical release. Although the sequel is still a work in progress, fans can anticipate witnessing the characters breaking new rules and discovering its connection to the original film. The wait won't be much longer.

Trick 'r Treat 2 is inching closer to becoming a reality, as the director of the beloved cult classic has provided an update on the progress of the long-discussed project, which first emerged in 2009.

Trick 'r Treat is a horror comedy anthology that encompasses four distinct stories, all interconnected by a central theme: whenever someone defies a Halloween tradition or rule, a mischievous demon named Sam emerges to restore order. Sam, the film's captivating character, has garnered a devoted following, rivaling the movie itself in popularity. In fact, Funko even unveiled a Trick 'r Treat Sam pop figurine to honor this beloved character. The clamor for a sequel has persisted ever since the release of the original film, with many horror enthusiasts eagerly hoping for its realization.

Trick 'r Treat's immense popularity and memorable dialogue have cemented its status as a cult classic, ensuring its lasting presence in the minds of devoted fans. Now, this endurance is yielding results as progress is being made on the development of a sequel to the original film. In an interview with Collider, the film's original director, Micheal Dougherty, excitingly revealed that the long-awaited sequel is finally underway. "I will say this, because we said it last year at the Beyond Fest screening, the sequel is in active development with Legendary," Dougherty confirmed. "I'll go so far as to say that we have several drafts of a script… I brought back the same storyboard artist I mentioned before, Simeon Wilkins, so we have a stack of storyboards and a good fat stack of concept art done by Breehn Burns as well. So it's inching along."

An Anticipated Horror Movie Sequel Inches Closer to Reality

An announcement was made last year about the development of a Trick 'r Treat sequel, directed by Dougherty. However, details were scarce. Now, Dougherty has revealed more information about the progress and the collaboration involved in bringing the sequel to life. "I hope to discuss with Legendary," Dougherty stated. "They have been amazing collaborators. However, timing is crucial, especially after the recent strike. The next step would involve looking at the budget, schedule, and other factors. Nonetheless, we have an excellent script for the sequel. I have enlisted Zach Shields and Todd Casey, my co-writers from Krampus, to work on Trick 'r Treat Part 2 with me."

Trick 'r Treat was initially released as a direct-to-DVD and Blu-Ray film. However, it had previously premiered at film festivals as early as 2007 and had its first theatrical release in 2022. The film has gained a growing fanbase over the years since its release. A successful theatrical release for the sequel is highly anticipated. Despite the sequel's prolonged development, the fanbase's dedication, the theatrical re-release, and the graphic novel and comic adaptations from DC based on the film have all helped maintain interest and excitement.

The Trick 'r Treat sequel is still a work in progress, but it will undoubtedly be captivating to witness which boundaries the characters will defy and how it will connect to the original film. Fans will have to be patient for the outcome, although the wait won't be much longer.

Trick 'r Treat can currently be streamed on Prime Video.
