There are already rumors about a sequel to the summer hit movie "Barbie". Here are all the details we have so far.
She's fantastic, wrapped in plastic, and her movie has always promised to be equally fantastic. The upcoming film "Barbie" by Greta Gerwig is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. With stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the movie follows Barbie on a journey into the real world, exploring the Mattel company and the concept of girlhood. Ken also plays a role in the movie.
In our 5-Star review of the movie, we describe "Barbie" as an enigmatic film that appeals to both children and adults in a thoughtful and genuine manner. It is comforting yet does not pander to stereotypes, making it a personal and existential experience. Despite being a summer blockbuster, the potential for a sequel is open to speculation.
Will there be a Barbie sequel?
While Barbie 2 hasn’t been officially confirmed nor denied, it likely won’t happen, despite there being discussions surrounding it.
Margot Robbie has been engaged in these discussions, telling Time Magazine that a sequel "could go a million different directions from this point. But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels."
The chances of a potential Barbie sequel seem slim after the first film's creator, Greta Gerwig, expressed her hesitation in a recent interview with The New York Times, saying, "I wouldn't want to squash anybody else's dream but for me, at this moment, I'm at totally zero." Margot Robbie also shared similar sentiments, explaining, "I think we put everything into this one. We didn't build it to be a trilogy or something."
We will update this section as we learn more.
Barbie 2 release date: When would a sequel possibly come out?
If a Barbie sequel were to go ahead, it probably wouldn’t come for a while.
The first Barbie film took around 14 years from idea to reality, and it's been a long time coming. It's possible that a sequel wouldn't take as long, since the filming of the first movie was completed in just a few months, from March to July 2022. However, if Gerwig or any of the cast were to return, their pre-planned schedules would need to be considered. If we were optimistic, we could predict that a Barbie sequel would be released within the next five years, but the recent strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA may delay any current discussions of Barbie 2.
Barbie 2 cast: Who would star in the sequel?
As there has been no confirmation of a sequel, there is also no confirmed cast list. However, if Barbie 2 were to be greenlit, it is likely that many of the original actors would return. This may include, but not be limited to:
Margot Robbie as Barbie
Ryan Gosling as Ken
Helen Mirren as The Narrator
Will Ferrell as the Mattel CEO
America Ferrera as Gloria
Ariana Greenblatt as Sasha
Rhea Perlman portrays Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie. Margot Robbie has expressed interest in starring in a sequel, but the follow-up film could take a different approach by introducing a new set of Barbies and a new cast, as no one is contractually obligated to a sequel.
Furthermore, Cillian Murphy, who is currently starring in Barbie’s sibling movie Oppenheimer, has stated that he would be interested in playing a future Ken.
When it comes to the director's chair, it would be great to see Greta Gerwig return for another Barbie sequel. However, if she's unavailable, it would be exciting to consider other talented female directors, like Sofia Coppola.
Barbie 2 trailer: Is there a trailer?

Barbie 2 plot: What could happen in a sequel?
Warning: Spoilers ahead for the first Barbie movie.
In Barbie 2, we can expect to see Barbie navigating her new life as a human. This could include finding a job, visiting the doctor, and exploring romantic relationships, all while tackling the challenges of living in a world dominated by the patriarchy.
The movie will likely delve deeper into Gloria and Sasha’s lives, as well as explore the inner workings of the Mattel Toy company. Meanwhile, Ken will remain in Barbieland and continue his journey of self-discovery, exploring masculinity in a Barbie world. The film will undoubtedly continue to examine Barbie’s role in gender and commodification, all while maintaining a sense of humor and an abundance of fabulous pink outfits.

As an enthusiastic fan, I'm thrilled to hear about the potential for a Barbie sequel. The first movie was a delightful and thought-provoking take on the iconic doll, and I'm eager to see where the story could go next. I trust that Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie will continue to bring their unique vision and creativity to the franchise, and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us.
While I'm sad to hear that Greta Gerwig may not be returning for a sequel, I'm excited to see what other talented female directors could bring to the table. Sofia Coppola would be an excellent choice, as her films often explore themes of girlhood and identity in a nuanced and compelling way.
Overall, I'm cautiously optimistic about the possibility of a Barbie sequel. The first movie was a critical and commercial success, and I believe there's still plenty of potential for the franchise to explore. I'm excited to see what the future holds for Barbie and her friends.
