David Foster’s daughter Amy Foster is defending her father against claims he deserted his older children for 2-year-old son Rennie.
David, 74, shared a video of his toddler playing the drums on social media on January 5. Unfortunately, some Instagram users used this as an opportunity to criticize the music composer's parenting and make jokes about his age. One user commented, "Lol!! He's the dad...he's also got daughters (he abandoned) older than me," while another said, "Dang. He's 74 and the father of a 3-year-old."
Amy, 50, swiftly responded to refute the allegations. "Hi, I'm his daughter. There's absolutely no abandonment," she stated. "I just spoke to my dad five minutes ago. Are you supporting us? It's difficult to discern these days." Amy praised the video of Rennie as "amazing," and questioned why anyone would focus on "something negative" instead of his incredible talent. She also highlighted the positive comments about her and her sisters elsewhere in the thread.
The family is doing great," she said. "We have a lot of love for our dad. Our dad loves us and we love how he is with Rennie."
David is the father of six children: Allison Jones, 53, Amy, Sara Foster, 42, Erin Foster, 41, Jordan Foster, 37, and Rennie, whom he shares with wife Katharine McPhee.
Amy stated that her children do not hold any grudges against their father, but David has openly admitted to feeling distant from his kids during the early years of his career.
In a January 2023 interview with People, he confessed, "I missed out on a lot because I wasn't there to raise them. The distance was a challenge, and it's a regret that I have. I did the best I could, even though it was often far from perfect. I also worked extensively. I've devoted my life to creating music."

The Grammy winner is now approaching parenting in a "different" way, striving to be more present with his youngest son. He explained, "Not better or worse, just different." With his remaining time in mind, he emphasized that although he still works and is often away, the time with his son is now more precious to him.
As part of this new approach, he has been by Rennie’s side as the 2-year-old explores his talent for drumming. David and McPhee, 39, who married in 2019, have frequently shared videos of their son practicing and honing his craft.
During a conversation with We at the Golden Globes on January 7, David expressed his amazement at Rennie's incredible talent and admitted that he and McPhee are unable to explain it. "We play together and I jam with him, but I don't know where he learned. I swear I'm not a drummer. I have no idea how he learned. So fluid. That's the real mind-blowing thing," David told Us, adding, "He's not even potty-trained."
McPhee, meanwhile, previously told Us in October 2023 that Rennie’s drumming has really gone to “another level” in the past few months.

"My husband's text messages are starting to change," she said. "He's becoming more obsessed with playing games all day. I suggested we go to the park or somewhere fun, but he just wants to play his drums."
McPhee acknowledged that she initially dismissed her son's passion for music, but now recognizes it as a significant part of his future. "I don't know if he'll continue with it, but I must admit, it's quite impressive," she shared with Us.
