The new Mean Girls musical movie features a fresh cast, as well as some familiar faces. Here's a breakdown of all the cameos in the film.
Mean Girls, the 2024 remake of the 2004 movie and an adaptation of the Broadway musical, has arrived in US cinemas, with the script written by Tina Fey. The synopsis of the film follows new student Cady Heron as she is introduced to the top of the social hierarchy by a group of popular girls called the Plastics, led by the conniving queen bee Regina George. When Cady makes the mistake of falling for Regina's ex-boyfriend, she becomes a target in their world.
Given the widespread influence of the franchise, including the enduring popularity of phrases like "fetch," it was expected that the original cast members from the 2004 movie would make a return. Fortunately, there are a few returning actors and surprise appearances, as well as some new and exciting additions. Here's a list of the prominent cameo appearances in the 2024 Mean Girls movie.
Ashely Park
Paramount Pictures
If you've watched the Mean Girls musical, you'll know Ashley Park not just for her role as Emily in Paris, but also as the original Gretchen Wieners on Broadway. In the movie, she takes on the role of a strict French teacher at North Shore High who eventually joins in on social media trends with the students.
Jon Hamm
Paramount Pictures
The well-known actor Jon Hamm, known for his role in Mad Men, makes an appearance as Coach Carr in the movie. Unlike his role in the 2004 film, his presence in this movie is less prominent and does not involve any inappropriate relationships with underage students. Hamm portrays the role of an uneducated educator convincingly and delivers several humorous lines in the film.
Tim Meadows and Tina Fey
Paramount Pictures
Tina Fey and Tim Meadows return to their roles as Principle Duval and Ms. Norbury in the film, smoothly slipping back into their characters. However, this time around, there are noticeable differences, primarily in the form of new jokes and a surprising twist - the revelation that the two characters are actually married, adding a new element to their relationship from the original movie.
Social media stars
Unlike the 2004 version, this new Mean Girls is set in the age of TikTok. And thus, social media plays a large part in how the school social hierarchy functions.
Megan Thee Stallion
Here are several montage scenes featuring the actors portraying typical students recording themselves, as well as real social media influencers, many of whom will be recognizable to the movie's intended audience. Some of them can even be seen in the trailer below:
Megan Thee Stallion
Megan Thee Stallion isn't only performing the end credits song with Regina actor Reneé Rapp, but she also makes an appearance in the movie in the social media montage scenes. She delivers some memorable lines in these montages and gets caught up in the high school drama, despite not seeming to know or care about it.
Lindsay Lohan
Paramount Pictures
Lindsay Lohan is making a comeback, this time not as Cady Heron but as the judge in the Mathlete tournament. Her appearance leads to plenty of funny and referential lines. For more on Lohan's cameo in Mean Girls 2024, check out our other article, as well as which 2004 actors sadly weren't able to make it.
Mean Girls will be available in US cinemas on January 12, and UK cinemas on January 17.
Editor's P/S
As a huge fan of the original Mean Girls movie and the subsequent Broadway musical, I was thrilled to hear about the upcoming 2024 remake. The star-studded cast, including Ashley Park, Jon Hamm, Tim Meadows, Tina Fey, and Lindsay Lohan, has me even more excited for this new take on the classic story. I can't wait to see how these talented actors bring their own unique interpretations to the beloved characters we all know and love.
The inclusion of social media influencers and Megan Thee Stallion's cameo appearance adds a modern twist to the film, reflecting the significant role social media plays in today's society. It will be interesting to see how this aspect of the movie influences the dynamics between the characters and the overall plot. Overall, I have high hopes for the 2024 Mean Girls remake and can't wait to experience this iconic story in a fresh and exciting way.
