Tetris, a widely known and beloved game, has been triumphed over after more than 30 years since its release. Surprisingly, the triumphant player is 13-year-old Willis Gibson from Oklahoma.
Gibson shared his incredible achievement on YouTube, showcasing his elation and disbelief. In the video, he can be heard exclaiming, "Oh my god," and expressing, "I can't feel my fingers."
The video clearly shows Willis reaching level 157 (labeled as level 18 in the video) before the game freezes. This point is known as the "kill screen" because Tetris was not designed to be playable beyond this level. Technically, Tetris is unbeatable and could go on forever. However, Willis is believed to have set a world record by reaching this point.
According to Tetris expert Vince Clemente, no human has ever achieved this level in Tetris before. He stated that Willis did the impossible, surpassing the limits previously thought to be unreachable. While AI has surpassed this point, Willis's achievement as a human in Tetris stands alone.
Willis' mother purchased a RetroN console and a CRT TV for him, and he spends roughly 20 hours per week playing Tetris. In addition to being an avid player, Willis is a professional Tetris competitor and is considered one of the most skilled players in the United States. He achieved third place at the Classic Tetris World Championship in October 2023 and is currently preparing for another upcoming event in Waco, Texas. To date, Willis has earned approximately $3,000 from competing in Tetris tournaments.
Tetris, which was created by Alexey Pajitnov in 1985, saw Henk Rogers collaborating with Pajitnov to promote and popularize the game to a wider audience, achieving enormous success. As the best-selling video game of all time, Tetris has been ported to almost every platform imaginable.
In 2023, a feature film titled Tetris was released, with Taron Egerton portraying Rogers and Nikita Yefremov taking on the role of Pajitnov.
