Zack Snyder Expresses Interest in Collaborating with James Gunn for a DCU Project

Zack Snyder expresses his willingness to rejoin the DCEU, on the condition that he is offered the opportunity to direct a Batman movie, as revealed by the director himself

Director Zack Snyder has expressed interest in returning to the DCEU, but only if James Gunn offered him a specific movie. Love him or hate him, Snyder has undeniably left a mark on the live-action DCEU.

Since 2013's Man of Steel, Snyder has been involved in several major DC Studios movies, such as both Wonder Woman films and Justice League. Despite a two-year absence from the universe, it appears that Snyder would consider directing for DC again if the new co-CEO extended an offer for a specific movie.

Snyder will come back to DC if Batman is on the table

The infamous director recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss his upcoming sci-fi epic two-part film Rebel Moon.

During the conversation, Snyder shared that he promptly reached out to his long-time friend and collaborator, James Gunn, to offer his congratulations on becoming DC's co-CEO alongside Peter Safran. "I called him to wish him all the best," he stated. "I expressed my hope for his success." Snyder further explained that although his time with DC has come to an end, he would readily return if Gunn presented the opportunity to adapt "The Dark Knight Returns."

Snyder emphasized that he would only agree to make the film if Gunn and Safran permitted him to create "an authentic adaptation of the graphic novel." The Dark Knight Returns is a four-issue comic book miniseries from 1986, written by renowned comic creator Frank Miller, known for creating the character Elektra in the Daredevil series.

Miller's Batman miniseries is renowned for its influential portrayal of the Caped Crusader, placing Batman in a dystopian Gotham where he abandons his hero persona following Jason Todd's death. Despite this, the ongoing and escalating crime forces Batman out of retirement, leading him to confront obstacles from the Gotham City police force and the United States government.

Snyder probably wouldn't encounter any resistance from Miller himself for this adaptation, as Miller expressed his approval of seeing his work on the big screen during an appearance on The Beard and The Bald Movie Podcast. "A few years have passed since all this began, and initially, I was quite protective," Miller explained. "But now, I've taken a step back and have a broader perspective on the whole thing, and all I can say is: this is great."

"I entered the scene with my idea for The Dark Knight Returns, and that really launched my career. Since then, I've seen a strong collaboration between the two fields benefitting both sides. I have gained a lot from Dark Knight Returns, and they have too, and this relationship can only be seen as positive. Visit here for more DC content, and other superhero hubs listed below:"

The upcoming movie and television lineup includes The Batman Part II, Joker 2, and Harley Quinn Season 4. Fans can also look forward to The Flash Season 9, Deadpool 3, Fantastic Four, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars. Additionally, there's Marvel Zombies, The Marvels, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Daredevil: Born Again, Blade MCU, and Captain America 4.

Editor's P/S

As a passionate fan of the DC Universe, I'm thrilled to hear that Zack Snyder is open to collaborating with James Gunn on a future DCU project. Snyder's unique vision and storytelling style have captivated audiences, and his contributions to the DCEU have been significant. His departure from the franchise left many fans disappointed, so the prospect of his return is exciting.

Snyder's interest in directing a Batman movie based on "The Dark Knight Returns" is particularly intriguing. This iconic comic book miniseries is a fan favorite, and Snyder's interpretation of the story could be truly remarkable. His ability to create visually stunning and emotionally charged sequences would lend itself perfectly to the dark and gritty tone of "The Dark Knight Returns." Additionally, Snyder's track record of working with Batman characters, such as Ben Affleck's portrayal in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," suggests that he has a deep understanding of the character and his motivations.
