Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer admits that the company is trailing behind its competitors when it comes to translating its gaming franchises onto TV and film. In an interview with The Washington Post, Spencer acknowledges that Microsoft is still in the early stages of this endeavor.
For instance, Sony, in contrast, boasts a colossal film and TV studio and even has its own gaming-focused branch called PlayStation Productions, which is responsible for the highly anticipated HBO adaptation of The Last of Us and numerous other forthcoming projects. Similarly, Nintendo recently collaborated with Universal to produce The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which achieved tremendous success.
Microsoft is currently working on various projects in the realm of video content. They have the Halo TV series in collaboration with Paramount, with a second season in progress. Additionally, they had previously partnered with director Peter Jackson for a Halo movie, although this project faced significant challenges. Looking to the future, Microsoft is collaborating with Netflix for a Gears of War movie and anime, as well as a Minecraft movie featuring Jason Momoa. Furthermore, there is a Fallout series in development from the creators of Westworld. Microsoft acknowledges that they may not possess the same level of expertise in video content production as Sony or Nintendo, but they recognize the importance of storytelling in video games and believe that their creators possess the same capabilities as creators in any other medium.
Microsoft's strategy has evolved over the years. Once, it established Xbox Entertainment Studios with experienced industry professionals and embarked on notable ventures. However, the company made the decision to shut down the division in 2014.
Apart from the aforementioned projects, Xbox head Matt Booty has teased fans with the promise of more exciting announcements. In June 2023, when questioned about the possibility of adapting Starfield, Booty hinted at undisclosed projects in progress, indicating that there is much to look forward to.
