Head of Xbox Phil Spencer and Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty held a special panel discussing the future of gaming at Xbox after the Xbox Games Showcase. During the panel, Booty revealed the company's output goal of four games per year. Game Rant had the opportunity to attend the panel and witness first-hand the exciting first-party titles showcased at the event, including Fable and Avowed. Hellblade 2 was also announced with a 2024 release window, but unfortunately, Fable's release date was not disclosed. In addition, new games such as Compulsion's South of Midnight and Inxile's Clockwork Revolution were revealed, providing a glimpse into the future of Xbox's content pipeline.
Booty has set a goal of releasing four games per year through the pipeline, although it remains uncertain whether this number includes games from Bethesda. Regardless, with Redfall already out and Starfield and Forza Motorsport set for release on September 6 and October 10 respectively, it seems that there are at least three games expected this year. Looking ahead to 2024, the release windows for both Hellblade 2 and Avowed have been announced, which would account for half of the projected four games per year.
It's important for fans to remember that achieving this goal may encounter delays, but Xbox is actively working towards a more frequent release schedule by utilizing all of their acquired studios. Each studio under Xbox Game Studios is diligently working on various projects, and with time, they hope to establish a routine. In addition, Phil Spencer addressed the ongoing Activision Blizzard acquisition while sporting a Hexen shirt, a classic magic FPS from the 90s developed by Raven Software, which is now under the Activision Blizzard umbrella. Despite the challenges, Spencer remains confident that Microsoft will find a way to expand their game offerings and consistently release more titles each year.
Microsoft's efforts to acquire companies like Ultimate and Booty's goal are expected to have positive effects on the Xbox ecosystem. The absence of enough first-party titles has been a major concern for fans during the Xbox One era and early Xbox Series X era. However, Microsoft is leaving no stone unturned to address this issue. Though fans may still need to be patient, it's apparent that Microsoft's efforts will yield better results in the near future.
