Microsoft has expanded the range of color options available for gamers to personalize their controllers in the Xbox Design Lab. While custom controllers with captivating color schemes and designs are regularly released by Xbox, the Xbox Design Lab provides a platform for gamers to truly express their own individuality.
Launched in 2016, the Xbox Design Lab allows customers to select their preferred colors for different components of the Xbox controller, including the body, thumbsticks, triggers, and D-pad. The base customization is priced the same as purchasing a pre-made controller, and additional options include metallic colors, rubberized grips, and the opportunity to add an engraved message. Furthermore, those who choose an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller can even customize the color of the thumbstick's accent ring.
In 2021, Xbox introduced the Aqua Shift custom controller featuring a captivating surface that changes colors. Following its success, Xbox released the Stellar Shift and Lunar Shift controllers. Due to the high demand, Microsoft has extended the color-shifting options to the Xbox Design Lab. The new options include Aqua, Lunar, Stellar Shift, and the latest addition, Cosmic Shift, which is a white color with a touch of pink shimmer. These color options are available for the body or front faceplate of the controller and require an additional $9.99 on top of the base price.
The ability to personalize their Xbox controllers has allowed gamers to create one-of-a-kind designs, which they proudly share on social media. These designs serve as inspiration for others who may be overwhelmed by the numerous options available. For more design concepts, the front page of the Xbox Design Lab website showcases a collection of customized controllers inspired by popular games like Overwatch, Destiny 2, and the recently launched Lies of P.
Prior to the official unveiling of the Starfield limited-edition Xbox controller, numerous fans had already utilized the Design Lab to design their own controllers inspired by the Bethesda RPG. Apart from offering a means for gamers to express themselves, the ability to select the color scheme of the controller can also serve a practical purpose. One gamer shared their experience of using the Xbox Design Lab to create a controller that complemented their wife's home decor. Now, there is a growing anticipation among Xbox enthusiasts for the company to expand customization options by allowing the creation of personalized wraps for their Series X or S consoles.
