Insomniac's track record with superhero games has been nothing short of impressive, with Marvel's Spider-Man and its sequel garnering critical and commercial success. With the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine, fans are excited to see what the studio will bring to the table for the X-Men universe. After years of waiting for a great Wolverine game, Insomniac's expertise in creating varied enemies and thrilling open-world gameplay is sure to make this title worth the wait. The X-Men universe has no shortage of iconic villains, and Insomniac has a plethora of options to choose from for mini-bosses. However, one particular villain stands out as the perfect choice.
Marvel's Wolverine Should Have Sentinel Mini-Boss Fights
The Sentinels are infamous foes that have been present in X-Men comics since 1965's The X-Men #14 and have become a staple of the Marvel universe. These towering robots with humanoid faces and glowing eyes are designed to locate and eliminate Mutants using long-range sensors that can detect them from miles away. Though the Sentinels have had various incarnations over the years, they always pose a significant threat to Mutant-kind, making them ideal mini-bosses for Marvel's Wolverine. With nearly 60 years' worth of source material to choose from, the game has the unique opportunity to select and adapt different versions of the Sentinels for both their visual and gameplay designs.
To make Marvel's Wolverine stand out, Insomniac can explore the potential of the Sentinels as unique enemy types. The game can introduce a basic Sentinel as an entry-level mini-boss, armed with a simple energy weapon and towering over Wolverine. As the game progresses and Wolverine becomes more powerful, more advanced Sentinels can be deployed to eliminate the ever-evolving threat. These advanced Sentinels can possess improved weaponry, both in melee and ranged combat, requiring the player to use Wolverine's abilities more tactically.
In the later stages of the game, Marvel's Wolverine can present gigantic Sentinels that require Shadow of the Colossus-like maneuvers to defeat. In some versions of the story, Sentinels can even adapt their abilities to fight specific Mutants, and even steal their powers. This feature, although controversial in comics and movies, can be a perfect fit for the gaming medium, providing a constantly evolving threat that demands real skills to overcome.
Integrating a larger, overarching quest line into Marvel's Wolverine would give the Sentinel mini-bosses more purpose and prevent them from feeling like mindless additions. One exciting possibility could be Wolverine eventually facing off against Master Mold, a highly advanced Sentinel model with raised intelligence, mobility, and combat capabilities. Bolivar Trask, the mastermind behind the Sentinel program, could also play a role in the story, using Master Mold as a puppet to carry out his own orders. It would be thrilling to see both of these iconic villains make an appearance in the game. Marvel's Wolverine is currently being developed for the PlayStation 5.
