Asha, the newest Disney heroine to hit the big screen in the new film Wish, raises the question of whether she is truly a princess. Here’s everything you need to know. Disney has a rich history of iconic princesses, from Snow White to Elsa and Anna. Adding to this lineup is Asha (played by Ariana DeBose), the latest female lead in Wish.
The film's synopsis describes how young Asha's powerful wish is granted by a cosmic force named Star, who helps her save her kingdom from King Magnifico. The story highlights the magical connection between the will of a courageous human and the power of the stars, and the wondrous things that can happen as a result. As Asha works to save the people of Rosas, some wonder if she may be a Disney princess.
Is Asha a princess in Disney’s Wish?
No, technically Wish’s Asha isn’t a Disney princess.
The film portrays Asha as a typical girl from the kingdom of Rosas, determined to become an apprentice to King Magnifico (Chris Pine). Essentially, she is more of a Royal intern rather than actual royalty.
During the design process, Asha was originally intended to be a princess, but this idea was eventually changed. Director Chris Buck confirmed this in a recent interview with Animation Scoop, stating, "A lot of people assume when they see the trailer that she’s a Disney princess. And sometimes that comes with some things that they expect of a certain character."
The key cast in Wish shares a common sentiment about Asha. Ariana DeBose explained to Digital Spy, “She doesn’t wish for herself - she wishes for everyone else, for the community. She’s a different kind of helper. We’ve had Disney princesses and heroines, and now we have Asha, who does what fairy godmothers do.”
She doesn't always need to be given everything or be told how to do something. Asha provides help, and that's what sets her apart within the Disney character legacy. It's important to note that she doesn't have to be of royal status to be considered a Disney princess, as evidenced by characters like Mulan, Wendy Darling, Esmerelda, Megara, and Tinkerbell who have all been classified as such without any royal ties.

As an enthusiastic fan, I have mixed feelings about whether Asha should join the Disney Princess lineup. On one hand, I understand the reasons why she might not be considered a traditional princess. She is not born into royalty, and she does not have a romantic relationship with a prince. On the other hand, I believe that Asha embodies many of the qualities that we have come to expect from Disney princesses. She is kind, compassionate, and courageous. She is also a strong and independent woman who is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in.
Ultimately, I believe that the decision of whether or not to include Asha in the Disney Princess lineup is up to Disney. However, I would be thrilled to see her join the ranks of these iconic characters. I believe that she would be a positive role model for young girls, and she would help to expand the definition of what it means to be a princess.
