Why Tom Holland Regrets Casting as Spider-Man

Tom Holland, the third actor to portray Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently opened up about his one regret regarding his casting. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Holland admitted that he should have reached out to Andrew Garfield, the previous actor to play Peter Parker, after he was cast in the role. Holland acknowledged that his lack of communication was due to his youthful naivete, as he did not consider how Garfield might have felt after his own Spider-Man film was canceled.

I was young and foolish when I landed the role at 19. At the time, I was so focused on securing the part that I failed to consider how my sudden success might have affected Andrew, who was replaced. If I were in his shoes, it would have been difficult for me to recover from such a setback. Andrew, on the other hand, managed to bounce back in a remarkable way. Looking back, I wish I had reached out to him and expressed my gratitude for the opportunity, while acknowledging the impact it had on him.

Garfield's resilience after being removed from the role of Spider-Man was remarkable, as noted by Holland. Despite the setback, his acting career continued to flourish with nominations for Best Actor at the Oscars for both Hacksaw Ridge in 2017 and Tick, Tick... Boom! in 2022. In fact, Garfield remains the sole actor to have portrayed Spider-Man on the big screen to have received such recognition.

Despite Garfield's impressive portrayal of Spider-Man in the past, the franchise received mixed reviews due to the complicated plot and the fact that it was seen as a replacement for Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man. It's no surprise that audience interest dwindled as a result. However, Garfield's interpretation of the character remained spot-on. Fortunately, Marvel Studios seized the opportunity to utilize the Multiverse Saga and brought back Maguire and Garfield to join Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Garfield's return was seamless, and many fans praised his performance as the film's best. One of the movie's most touching moments was when Garfield's Spider-Man saved Zendaya's MJ, finally achieving closure for the loss of his beloved Gwen Stacy. This scene proved to be a turning point for Garfield, reuniting him with Spider-Man fans once again.
