The Mob Vote in Minecraft is an exciting annual event that allows the community to participate in the game's development, with over 5 million votes collected this year.
The Penguin, despite receiving the lowest number of votes in the 2023 Mob Vote, still has strong justification to be included in the game. It can greatly improve travel and introduce more ambient mobs.
Although Mojang has not incorporated numerous previous nominations, they have expressed their intention to take into account past Mob Vote nominees for upcoming events. This raises expectations for the eventual inclusion of the Penguin and other mobs in the game.
The Mob Vote in Minecraft has been a significant event in the game since 2017, generating excitement among players on an annual basis. This year's event lasted only a few days, but managed to collect over 5 million votes according to Mojang reports. It is evident that this occasion has become an interactive way for the Minecraft community to contribute to the game's development.
Regrettably, for those who recently participated in the 2023 Mob Vote and chose the Penguin or Crab, it was the Armadillo that ultimately received the highest number of votes. Despite the Armadillo serving a purpose in the beloved sandbox game, the addition of the Penguin would have been more captivating. After all, some members of the Minecraft community have been advocating for penguins to be included in the game since its launch in 2009.
Penguins in Minecraft Would Be Helpful For Multiple Reasons
The Penguin received only 25.2% of the votes in the 2023 Mob Vote, as mentioned in an official Minecraft Twitter post. In contrast, the Crab obtained 32.5% and the Armadillo claimed the remaining 42.3%. This outcome surprised many, considering the earlier speculation on Reddit forums and Twitter threads that the Penguin would emerge as the winner or at least a top contender.
Nevertheless, the Penguin's last place in the Mob Vote does not diminish the merits of including this creature in the game.
Minecraft Penguins Would Enhance Travel
On October 5, Minecraft released several explanations for the introduction of the aquatic bird. Some speculate that the mob failed to win the vote due to its perceived lack of utility compared to the Crab's claws and the Armadillo's potential for dog armor. However, the studio emphasized that the Penguin would enhance a player's boating experience, particularly beneficial for those in the early stages of gameplay. Additionally, players expressed hope that they could utilize the Penguin to improve roads in The Nether, as this often requires the use of boats, although this feature was not officially confirmed.
Minecraft Needs More Ambient Mobs
Moreover, the inclusion of additional non-aggressive creatures in Minecraft can prove advantageous for various reasons. Not only would it fulfill the desires of long-awaiting enthusiasts who have eagerly anticipated the appearance of certain avian species within the game, but it would also enhance the overall ambiance and vitality of the virtual world. These neutral mobs, unlike their hostile counterparts, have no intention of attacking players and will not yield any items upon their demise. Considering these factors, it is plausible to suggest that the introduction of penguins as an ambient mod would not only match the appeal of existing entities like pandas, polar bears, and bats, but potentially surpass them as well.
The standout feature of these mobs is their pleasing appearance combined with the notion that not every mob needs or should have a unique mechanic. One Reddit user on the Minecraft subreddit, u/TheBabyWolfcub, expressed their desire to simply enjoy the presence of penguins falling on a pebble beach.
Mojang has yet to incorporate many of the previously nominated mobs, but this may change over time as the Mob Vote continues to mature and new ideas are needed. Additionally, certain Minecraft biomes, like the swamp, have made a comeback, suggesting that previously introduced mobs could also return.
Fortunately, the studio has stated it will consider past Mob Vote nominees for future events.
Minecraft is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

As a Minecraft fan, I have mixed feelings about the Penguin not winning the Mob Vote. On the one hand, I understand why the Armadillo won - it's a unique and interesting mob with a lot of potential for gameplay. On the other hand, I think the Penguin would have been a great addition to the game as well. Penguins are adorable creatures that would have added a touch of whimsy and charm to the Minecraft world.
I also think they would have been a great way to encourage players to explore the frozen biomes, which are often overlooked. In addition, the Penguin could have had some interesting interactions with other mobs, such as the Polar Bear and the Snow Golem. Overall, I think the Penguin would have been a worthy winner of the Mob Vote, and I hope that Mojang will consider adding it to the game in the future.
