The journey to reach the level cap in Diablo 4 is filled with exciting items, but unfortunately, their level requirements often fail to match their item power, which can be frustrating for players. Even though the rarity of Uniques seems balanced, there are still some flaws in the game's itemization, such as broken Legendary Aspects, the absence of an attribute hierarchy on item tooltips, and Resistances. While farming for loot can be enjoyable, some aspects of a Diablo 4 player's equipment don't always make sense.
It's important to note that the level scaling in Diablo 4 exacerbates some of these issues. Many players believe that the current iteration is too punishing, as a character's surroundings become stronger as they level up. Enemies become tougher, bosses hit harder, and players must continuously upgrade their gear to survive. Upon reaching Level 60, players have already reached the maximum possible affix range that an item can have, making any levels beyond that solely about increasing the game's difficulty.
The current approach of capping out items earlier than player levels, as seen in games like Diablo 2 or Path of Exile, may seem logical. However, in Diablo 4, the level requirement for items dropped past Level 60 remains the same as the player's level at the time of acquisition. This has led to concerns about the impact on the trade economy, as items obtained by endgame characters are no different in affix range at Level 60 than at Level 100. A recent thread on the official subreddit for Diablo 4, started by AdLate8669, raised this issue and received widespread support from players. As the affixes remain the same beyond Item Power of 725, which only offers a slight increase in base armor or base damage, keeping level requirements for items at higher levels seems unnecessary. Fans have suggested a maximum level requirement of 70, given that Diablo 4 has unique items like Harlequin Crest that are far more significant in defining builds than any increase in Item Power beyond 725.
As Diablo 4 continues to evolve, the question remains as to how Blizzard will approach expansions. With the game's open-world design, the potential for a non-linear power progression is there, allowing for the possibility of a higher level cap or increased item power. As both players and developers continue to explore the game's mechanics, the best approach for the base version of Diablo 4 will become clearer. The game is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
