The show focused heavily on misdirection and introducing potential suspects, but this came at the expense of developing the characters' relationships and making the audience truly invested in Megan and Isabella's central dynamic.

Another problem is that Cruel Summer season 2 fails to convincingly capture the late 1990s setting. The fashion does not accurately represent the time period, and some of the dialogue and technology featured do not authentically reflect the socio-cultural aspects of that decade. Instead, the series heavily relies on music cues to evoke nostalgia and create a sense of the 1990s atmosphere.

Despite the mixed reception and relatively mild second season, Cruel Summer, a notable Freeform show, deserves consideration for a season 3 renewal. Nevertheless, the teen drama would benefit from abandoning the misleading clues and excessive reliance on the mystery element. It should instead strive to rediscover the equilibrium that pleasantly surprised viewers in the first season.
