The following article contains spoilers from Cruel Summer season 2, episode 10, "Endgame."

Summary

Elle Triedman, the showrunner and executive producer of Cruel Summer, officially confirms Isabella as Luke's murderer, attributing her choice to the deceptive friendship she had with Megan.

Isabella didn't have the intention to kill Luke, but when she discovered him on the brink of death, she made a quick decision to ensure Megan's future.

The lack of subversion and weak character connections in season 2 of Cruel Summer resulted in a less impactful and engaging storyline compared to season 1. Showrunner and executive producer Elle Triedman reveals the thought process behind choosing Luke's killer and confirms that there were alternate possibilities. In the second season of the Freeform teen drama, the major mystery revolves around identifying the person responsible for Luke's death. While Brent, Luke's older brother, initially believes he accidentally killed him, a surprising twist reveals that Isabella, portrayed by Lexi Underwood, suffocated Luke after he nearly drowned.

Triedman discussed the season 2 finale of Cruel Summer in an interview with TVLine. In confirming that there were alternative options for Luke's potential killer, including Debbie, Sheriff Myer, and Brent, Triedman explained that ultimately Isabella was chosen. According to Triedman, Isabella's role as Luke's killer was determined based on it being the culmination of the deceptive and possessive friendship between Isabella and Megan.

I decided to end it because it seemed like the culmination of our deceptive, possessive friendship. It's important to mention that Isabella didn't go there with the intention to kill him. She went there to talk to him, reason with him, and convince him to stay away from Megan's life. However, she was faced with him nearly dead, and in that moment, she made a snap judgment. She believed that this was the way to secure Megan's future.

Did Cruel Summer Season 2's Final Twist Deliver?

She is unequivocal in stating that there is insufficient space in [Megan's] life for both [her and Luke]. I highly doubt that murder was ever taken into account when she initially pondered the situation. Rather, she simply did not desire to share her. She no longer wished to be overshadowed by him and genuinely believed that she would bring more fulfillment to Megan's life, offering her a wider, more stimulating, and engaging existence, albeit in a purely platonic manner.

Unmasking the Sinister Truth: The Shocking Revelation Behind Luke's Cruel Summer Season 2 Murder

The second installment of the show appears to be intentionally reminiscent of its predecessor. However, while the ending of Cruel Summer season 1 is impactful, the second attempt falls short. In season 1, Jeanette (portrayed by Chiara Aurelia) stubbornly insists that she never saw Kate (played by Olivia Holt) in danger, which is technically true as she never lays eyes on her. Kate remains concealed behind a closed door, audibly crying for help. Despite Jeanette being fully aware of her distress, she chooses not to assist her, resulting in an agonizing scene to witness.

One criticism of Cruel Summer season 2 is its lack of subversion. Right from the beginning, Isabella is portrayed as a potential killer, and after ten episodes and some misdirection, it is revealed that she indeed is. While the visual of her keeping Luke underwater with the tip of her shoe is impactful, it lacks a deeper connection to the characters and fails to provide a strong sense of surprise.

Additionally, Cruel Summer season 2 suffers from a lack of likable characters. The series deliberately paints everyone as a suspect and reveals little about them, making it difficult to root for anyone. While the ten-episode season had moments of intrigue and positivity, it never reached the same levels of challenge and engagement as the Jeanette and Kate storyline.
