The Washington Commanders have let go of kicker Brandon McManus following allegations of sexual assault. The announcement was made by the NFL team through a post on Sunday, June 2, stating, "We have released K Brandon McManus."
Two women recently filed a lawsuit against former Jacksonville Jaguars player McManus, 32, for an incident that reportedly occurred on a flight to London in September 2023. According to court documents obtained by ESPN in May, the alleged victims were identified as Jane Doe I and Jane Doe II.
The women claim that McManus engaged in inappropriate behavior by "rubbing himself against them and grinding against them." They also accused the Jaguars of failing to ensure a safe environment for all individuals on the flight. The plaintiffs are requesting a jury trial and seeking damages exceeding $1 million.
McManus’ attorney, Brett R. Gallaway, responded to the accusations in a statement to ESPN on May 27, denying them. He stated, “These are completely false allegations created to tarnish the reputation of a talented and respected NFL player. We will vigorously defend Brandon and prove that these claims are simply an extortion scheme.”
Tony Buzbee, the lawyer for the accusers, mentioned that there was an effort to settle the issue before the lawsuit was formally submitted.
Our attempts to resolve the situation were met with arrogance, ignorance, and stupidity. The claims in the lawsuit are extremely grave," Buzbee shared on Instagram. "We thoroughly investigated the allegations and interviewed witnesses before proceeding with the cases. We will handle this case with the same determination that we are recognized for."
Washington Commanders Release Kicker Brandon McManus Amid Sexual Assault Allegations
Brandon McManus signed a one-year deal with the Jaguars in May 2023 after the Denver Broncos released him. The Jaguars made a statement addressing the lawsuit last week.
"We understand the complaint and recognize the importance of the claims," the team stated according to ESPN. "As we investigate further, we want to make it clear that we are committed to having a team made up of individuals who embody the values of our community and the game with integrity and respect."
Before making changes to the roster, the Commanders released a statement saying, "We take allegations like these very seriously."
McManus was released from the team after signing a one-year contract in March for $3.6 million. He expressed his gratitude to the Commanders for the chance to be part of the organization.
In a statement from his attorney, McManus maintained his innocence, stating that the allegations against him are completely false. He emphasized that there is clear evidence contradicting the accusers' claims. Despite being disappointed by the team's decision to release him before he could defend himself, McManus and his legal team are determined to clear his name through the legal process.
They are confident in their ability to refute the claims, fully vindicate McManus, and are eager to see him back on the field where he belongs.
