Get ready for a thrilling Halloween fright in 2024 as Deon Taylor takes the helm to direct the highly anticipated 'Blacula' remake, a spine-chilling horror film that resurrects the legendary character and brings new life to the vampire genre

Blacula is set to make a comeback next year, bringing terror to moviegoers once again. The 1972 classic will be remade and released in theaters next Halloween. According to Variety, the film's release is scheduled for October, coinciding with a Hollywood screening of the original 1972 version. The remake will be directed and co-written by Deon Taylor and produced by Roxanne Avent Taylor. Joining them as a co-writer on this project is Micah Ranum, known for his work on "The Silencing." The new version will bring African prince Mamuwalde back to life in the present-day post-pandemic setting, as he seeks vengeance against those responsible for his people's deaths and the theft of their cultural heritage. Deon Taylor expressed his excitement about reviving the film, saying, "As a filmmaker, I feel privileged to bring this movie back to life. On Halloween, we will honor and celebrate the film for the impact it has made on the cinematic landscape."

Who is 'Blacula'?

The 1972 film Blacula stars William Marshall as Mamuwalde, an African prince from the 18th century who seeks the assistance of Count Dracula in putting an end to the slave trade. Unfortunately, Mamuwalde is turned into a vampire and given the nickname 'Blacula'. After being awakened 200 years later, he believes that a woman named Vonetta McGee is the reincarnation of his lost love, and he sets out to find her. Although Mamuwalde meets his demise in the sunlight during the climax of Blacula, he makes a return in the film Scream Blacula Scream the following year. In this sequel, he finds himself in a clash with voodoo queen Pam Grier. Blacula's success led to the creation of several horror movies in the growing blaxploitation genre, such as Blackenstein, Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde, and Sugar Hill, a zombie thriller. Upon its initial release, Blacula was mostly seen as campy entertainment, but it has been reevaluated by critics in recent years. They now praise Marshall's powerful performance, the film's political undertones, and its stylish funk score.
