US Increases Airstrikes in Eastern Syria, Military Reports Amid Ongoing Attacks on Forces in the Region

US conducts additional strikes on Iranian-backed targets in eastern Syria in response to ongoing attacks on US forces in the region, says Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin

The Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin, confirmed that the United States conducted additional airstrikes in eastern Syria against targets linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran. These strikes were undertaken in response to ongoing attacks on American forces in the area. Austin further stated that President Joe Biden personally authorized the strikes, which focused on a training facility and a secure residence near the respective cities of Abu Kamal and Mayadin.

The US carried out strikes on targets in the region late Sunday night local time, marking the third instance in three weeks. These strikes were in response to repeated rocket and drone launches against facilities housing US troops in Iraq and Syria, for which the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran is held responsible. Since October 17, there have been a total of 46 attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria, resulting in at least 56 troops being injured. Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh stated on Thursday that the injuries included both traumatic brain injuries and minor injuries.

"The safety of U.S. personnel is of utmost importance to the President," Austin stated. In his directive, he emphasized the United States' unwavering commitment to defend itself, its personnel, and its interests.

In a bid to deter Iran without exacerbating tensions in the region, the Pentagon conducted a targeted strike on a weapons storage facility in eastern Syria on Wednesday. This action, referred to as a "precision self-defense strike," was carried out by two US F-15 fighter jets.

According to a high-ranking military official, it is believed that the facility had been storing weapons utilized in numerous airstrikes targeting our forces within this region.

Furthermore, on October 26, the United States conducted airstrikes on two facilities situated in eastern Syria, which were connected to Iran's IRGC and its associated groups. These strikes specifically targeted a storage facility for weapons and an ammunition storage facility.

The US has aimed to send a deterrent message to Iran by conducting strikes and increasing military presence in the region. This includes the deployment of two carrier strike groups, an amphibious ready group, and additional air defense systems to the Middle East. However, despite efforts to isolate the conflict in Gaza, attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria have continued.
