Pressing Israeli defense officials to clarify war milestones: Austin's mission in Austin

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's visit to Israel will focus on establishing clear objectives and milestones for the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza, as the Biden administration seeks to convey its expectations to Israeli officials amidst growing civilian casualties

During his visit to Israel, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will urge Israeli officials to set clear goals for their campaign against Hamas in Gaza. This will be the second visit by a top Biden administration official to the region, with the aim of conveying US expectations as civilian casualties continue to rise. A senior Defense Department official stated that Austin will be given detailed updates on the progress of the Israeli Defense Forces and their efforts to dismantle Hamas' military infrastructure in Gaza. Defense Minister (Yoav) Gallant will also be involved in these discussions.

Austin, the official stated that he will be questioning Israeli officials about the specific metrics they are considering for advancing to the next stage of their operation in Gaza. He emphasized his focus on increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza civilians and minimizing harm to noncombatants. This visit followed President Joe Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan's announcement in Tel Aviv that Israel plans to shift its military strategy to target Hamas leadership with more precision.

Austin will press Israeli leaders for a clear plan on navigating the various stages of its campaign in Gaza and setting specific operational goals. The Israeli security establishment is constantly evaluating progress and conditions and Secretary Austin aims to hear a precise self-assessment during his visit on Monday. The official emphasized that the US is present to offer consultation and ensure that effective planning is in place for transitioning away from major ground operations.

The official stated that Austin has prior experience with these types of transitions and is confident in the professionalism of the Israeli Defense Forces and their leaders. He is in Israel to ask questions and understand their plan.

This trip on Monday is Austin's second visit to Israel since October 7, and he has been in close consultation with his Israeli counterpart, Gallant. They have communicated 27 times since the attacks in early October.

The secretary will be visiting Bahrain and Qatar this week as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen US relationships in the region. Among the topics to be discussed in Bahrain is the ongoing aggression in the Red Sea from the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The official asserted that Austin views this as a "global issue" and an "acute threat" that jeopardizes the free flow of commerce and freedom of navigation.

Military-level discussions have been held by the US regarding the Houthis, with Austin planning to highlight Iran's role in the aggression.

"Iranians are causing deep destabilization. It has been well-documented for years that they have been arming, training, funding, and equipping the Houthis, who possess highly advanced military capabilities," stated a Defense official, who also mentioned that Austin will stress to Bahrain's leaders the importance of the international community holding Iran accountable.

The official has confirmed that China has naval warships in the region. Additionally, during his visit to Qatar, Austin will highlight the country's important role in communicating with Hamas to secure the release of hostages last month, expressing appreciation for their partnership.
