Warning: Spoilers for Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, Episode #24
Episode #24 of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War introduced a never-before-seen scene, giving viewers a glimpse into Yhwach's true motives and his mysterious past. These aspects had remained unexplored in the manga, making this new anime adaptation an exciting watch.
Throughout Thousand-Year Blood War, Yhwach, the Quincy king, has remained an enigma. He has launched two assaults on the Soul Society, but his reasons have not been fully revealed. Initially, revenge for the Quincy genocide by the Soul Reapers seemed like a plausible motive. However, the story has yet to explain how Yhwach, with his immense power, was defeated and sealed in the past. Manga readers were also curious about Yhwach's connection to the Soul King, which had not been adequately explained. The flashback in episode #24 addresses these questions.
Yhwach Wants To Return The World Of Bleach To Its Original State
In the first scene of episode #24 of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, we are taken back to a time before the war with the Quincy, a thousand years ago. Here, Ichibe Hyosube, the current leader of Squad 0, proposes a non-aggression pact to the Quincy king, Yhwach. However, Yhwach rejects the offer, considering it deceitful. Yhwach then questions Ichibe about the state of the world and the origins of its division into three realms, as well as the concept of death. It is evident that Yhwach despises the current state of existence and desires to return to a primordial world, where the Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, and the World of the Living are merged without any distinction between life and death.
During this encounter, Yhwach mentions his father, the Soul King, for the first time, expressing his dissatisfaction with the condition and separation of the Soul King's body parts. There is a hint of a connection between the Soul King's body and the division of the world, although the audience only glimpses fragmented images while Yhwach learns the truth from Ichibe's hand, which is actually a part of the Soul King. Yhwach seizes the hand but pays a price, seemingly losing his own divine power. This revelation explains how Yamamoto was able to defeat Yhwach a thousand years ago, as he did not possess the Almighty at that time, unlike in the present where the Soul Reaper commander was easily overcome.
Bleach Explains How Yhwach Was Defeated In The Past
Yhwach's motivations now make sense, which wasn't previously disclosed in the manga until much later and in a rushed manner, leaving unanswered questions. The history of the Quincy and the relationship between the Soul King and Yhwach was largely unknown. By revealing Yhwach's past and true goals at this point in the story, it enhances the narrative and breaks the notion of Yhwach being a one-dimensional character, despite his evil actions. Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has effectively clarified and expanded on certain aspects of the story that were briefly touched upon in the manga. This new flashback greatly aids fans in understanding Yhwach and the history of the Bleach world.
