During San Diego Comic-Con, NetherRealm Studios unveiled exciting details about the gameplay in Mortal Kombat 1. One of the notable features is the introduction of Kameo fighters who can be called in for assists. Following the game's release, the first DLC additions to the roster will include Ferra, Johnny Cage, Khameleon, Mavado, and Tremor. This reveals that the post-launch DLC will bring some heavy hitters to the game's main roster, such as Homelander and Takeda, as part of Kombat Pack 1. Additionally, the Kameo roster will feature a diverse range of colorful characters derived from the franchise's extensive 31-year history.
Mortal Kombat 1 is the latest installment in the long-running fighting game series and serves as the universe's second reboot. The new storyline, created by Fire God Liu Kang after defeating Kronika in Mortal Kombat 11, introduces significant changes to familiar characters. Raiden becomes a mortal warrior, Tarkat becomes an illness that transforms infected individuals into "bloodthirsty monsters," and the rivals Scorpion and Sub-Zero are now brothers under the Lin Kuei's leadership.
In terms of gameplay, one of the notable additions is the introduction of Kameo fighters, who can be called upon for assistance during a match. The roster includes retro-versions of Sonya Blade, Sub-Zero, and Kano, among others. Furthermore, additional characters will be added to the roster through future DLC releases. A recent announcement made by YouTuber UncagedGamez, who attended NetherRealm's San Diego Comic-Con panel, revealed the first post-launch additions to the Kameo roster. These additions include Ferra, Johnny Cage, Khameleon, Mavado, and Tremor.
Johnny Cage's inclusion in the Kameo fighters may not be surprising to some players, as half of the original Mortal Kombat roster is currently featured. There have been rumors that Khameleon may also be a Kameo fighter, as players have speculated based on her appearance as a background character in the reveal trailer for Li Mei, Tanya, and Baraka.
On the other hand, NetherRealm has been known for including lesser-known characters like Mavado, Tremor, and Ferra in the main and Kameo rosters. Mavado is the only one of the three to have appeared in multiple mainline Mortal Kombat games, specifically Deadly Alliance in 2002 and Armageddon in 2006. With the addition of Darius, players may speculate on which other obscure Mortal Kombat characters could potentially join the game's roster.
Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled to release September 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
