Mortal Kombat 1 includes interesting dialogue exchanges between characters, revealing secrets and unexpected pairings.
Long-time fans will be delighted to see the return of characters from previous games, including Dairou and Onaga, in the new timeline.
Johnny Cage's Hollywood persona gains further depth as he surprises everyone by revealing that he holds a PhD in quantum mechanics.
In Mortal Kombat 1, the timeline is once again reset, creating a fresh start. As with previous games, Netherrealm Studios has included intriguing dialogue exchanges between characters just before the first round commences. These conversations in Mortal Kombat 1 are not only interesting but also offer enlightening insights for long-time fans. They cover a range of topics, from clever remarks about a character's popularity among fans to playful speculation about the secret admirer of the captivating and lethal Princess Kitana from Outworld.
7 Havik Reveals Himself As Dariou
Dairou made his debut in Mortal Kombat: Deception in 2004 and has only appeared in that game (except for Mortal Kombat: Armageddon in 2006). Initially criticized for his underdeveloped backstory and powerful attack involving launching opponents backward, many fans considered him one of the weakest characters in the franchise.
However, in a conversation between Reptile and the chaotic Havik (also introduced in Deception), Dairou is mentioned by his real name. Surprisingly, Havik is taken aback and questions how Reptile knows his true identity. It is ironic that a character disliked by many has now become one of the most requested for a return in future Mortal Kombat games.
6 Onaga Exists In The New Timeline
Onaga, the dragon king and the boss in Mortal Kombat: Deception, has been extensively discussed in this title. He was unknowingly resurrected through trickery and nearly succeeded in conquering the realms, but was ultimately defeated by the forces of Light. Despite being a playable character in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, he has not appeared in any subsequent titles, much to the disappointment of fans.
Interestingly, Reiko reveals in conversations with Rain and Shang Tsung that Onaga still exists in this timeline, and this is further evidenced by his ending. Fans have longed for his return, and there is a possibility that he may make a comeback in a future DLC.
5 Johnny Cage (Supposedly) Has A PhD
Johnny Cage has consistently been portrayed as the stereotypical Hollywood persona: cocky, self-absorbed, and infatuated with himself. Naturally, this has led to numerous conflicts with other characters. Despite this, his characterization in the story mode shows that he possesses some depth.
Nevertheless, an unexpected revelation occurs during a conversation between him and Geras. When Geras refuses to disclose details about past timelines, Cage proudly asserts that he holds a PhD in quantum mechanics. Is he speaking the truth? Could there be a brilliant mind behind those expensive $5,000 glasses? Considering the limited knowledge available about this skilled and technical fighter's past and upbringing, it is entirely plausible.
4 Raiden Has A Crush On Kitana
In almost every Mortal Kombat game, it is widely known that Liu Kang and Kitana were involved. Despite the fact that she was originally sent to kill him, their relationship took a surprising turn. However, in this new timeline, it seems that there is another unexpected suitor vying for the affections of the beautiful princess.
Previously known as a powerful thunder god with a fierce disposition, this version of Raiden is much more modest. His infatuation with Kitana is no secret, as evidenced by numerous fighters in various interactions. Even when faced with this fact, the valiant champion of Earthrealm becomes flustered like a shy child - despite his formidable skills in combat - and attempts to brush it off. It is truly heartwarming.
3 Madame Bo Was Formerly A Lin Kuei Assassin
Madame Bo only had limited screen time in the first chapter and the ending of the story mode. Despite her age, she readily defends herself against Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Smoke, who are all formidable opponents. This proves that she is not just an ordinary old lady. In fact, she effortlessly recovers after being thrown over a ledge onto a table.
As the story unfolds, it is revealed by Scorpion to a surprised Kung Lao that Madame Bo was once a member of the Lin Kuei. This revelation is not just surprising, but also highlights how impressive and intriguing she truly is.
2 Ashrah And Reptile Are Dating?
The fallen demon, Ashrah, and the shape-shifting lizard Syzoth, better known as Reptile, make an unexpected alliance. Together, they dedicate themselves to the noble task of eradicating wicked souls using a mystical sword.
Through conversations with different warriors, it becomes evident that their connection goes beyond what Geras describes as a mere "liaison." Despite any warnings or jests, both Ashrah and Reptile remain unwaveringly by each other's side. Internet fans have been eagerly speculating that their relationship might extend beyond professional matters. Perhaps Netherrealm Studios will offer more insight on this matter in future character dialogues.
1 Liu Kang Subtly Breaks The Fourth Wall About Sindel
Sindel had always been adored by fans, until the 2011 reboot. In that version, her storyline depicted her killing her ex-husband and getting together with Shao Kahn. Even in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath DLC, this change remained unchanged, and she often made flirty comments during dialogues.
However, in the new timeline, her character has been entirely rewritten, much to the joy of fans. Netherrealm Studios anticipated this positive reception from fans, and Liu Kang subtly acknowledged these changes by stating, "Many appreciate the alterations I have made," during a specific interaction. Now, Sindel is a just and strong ruler, although she is not invulnerable and still carries emotional scars.
Mortal Kombat 1 is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
