Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Secret Invasion. The Skrulls in Secret Invasion possess impressive shapeshifting abilities. However, certain Marvel characters, such as Iron Man, pose a greater challenge when it comes to impersonation. In Captain Marvel, it is revealed that the Skrulls are infiltrating Earth, utilizing their ability to alter their bodies in order to imitate anyone they encounter. Yet, imitating superheroes, especially someone as prominent as Iron Man, presents specific obstacles.
Having escaped the Kree, the Skrulls have been searching for a new home. Despite the Avengers' rise to fame and their five-year absence, the Skrulls opted for a gradual and unnoticed invasion of Earth. Sometime before the events of Secret Invasion, a Skrull assumed the identity of Rhodey Rhodes, also known as War Machine. Surprisingly, the shapeshifting aliens did not attempt to impersonate any other Avenger, let alone someone as high-profile as Iron Man. This may be due, in part, to their inability to replicate what makes Tony Stark so renowned.
Skrulls Can Replicate Clothes But Iron Man's Suit Would Be Harder
Skrulls possess the ability to mimic every physical aspect of their copied targets, including voice, height, and DNA. Utilizing their advanced technology, they can also transform their clothing along with their bodies. To acquire their target's recent memories, physical contact is necessary for the Skrulls. Additionally, they utilize "fracking pods" to steal complete human identities. However, the Skrulls have limitations in terms of their transformative abilities. They cannot develop superpowers or special equipment independently, unless they acquire a Super Skrull upgrade. Consequently, while transforming into Tony Stark would be feasible, replicating an Iron Man suit of armor would be impossible.
In line with their comic book counterparts, the Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) possess similar capabilities and weaknesses. They could duplicate Spider-Man and Ant-Man's suits; however, they would be unable to reproduce Spider-Man's web shooters or Ant-Man's helmet and Pym Particles. Although they might succeed in creating a basic version of Iron Man's suit, it would likely lack the polished appearance, durability, lights, movable parts, and specialized materials that define it as a genuine suit of armor. Even the superpowered Super Skrulls in the MCU would fail to accomplish this feat, as their enhanced abilities stem from stolen DNA rather than technology.
Could Iron Man Defeat A Skrull?
Tony Stark's Iron Man technology would be incredibly useful during the Secret Invasion, not only because the Skrulls wouldn't stand a chance against Iron Man, but also because Stark would have a much easier time identifying Skrulls compared to Nick Fury. In the comics, Reed Richards develops Skrull-detecting technology, so it's only a matter of time before Iron Man integrates his own Skrull Detector into his suits of armor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Without this detector, Iron Man could use his lasers to extract a small piece of a suspected individual's body and reveal their true Skrull form, a technique demonstrated in the second episode of Secret Invasion through Sonya Falsworth's torture methods.
However, Tony Stark's real challenge would arise if the Skrulls were able to infiltrate his closest allies and obtain his DNA. In Iron Man 3, Stark explained to Rhodey that only he could operate his Iron Man armors. However, since Skrulls are capable of imitating their targets down to the cellular level, it is highly likely that they would be able to steal an Iron Man suit and effortlessly impersonate Stark. Unfortunately, it is uncertain if the MCU will ever showcase a confrontation between Iron Man and the Skrulls. On the bright side, though, the Skrulls would likely hesitate to besmirch Tony Stark's reputation by impersonating him since their deceit would be instantly recognized by everyone on Earth.
