DC fans were hopeful to see Michael Keaton in a live-action Batman Beyond movie, but unfortunately, this opportunity has been lost once again. The possibility of this project was contingent on the success of The Flash film at the box office. However, Keaton did make a much-anticipated return to the role of Batman in The Flash, marking one of the most beloved live-action portrayals of the character. In this movie, loosely inspired by the Flashpoint storyline, Keaton's Batman assumed a similar role to Thomas Wayne's Batman.
Interestingly, it has been revealed that there were plans to continue Keaton's portrayal of Bruce Wayne after The Flash. Kevin Smith, the renowned filmmaker, recently shared on an episode of Fatman Beyond that he had discussions with a family member of Michael Uslan, a long-time Batman producer. These discussions shed light on the potential future of Keaton's Dark Knight in a spinoff that fans have been eagerly awaiting for years. However, the realization of a live-action Batman Beyond movie with Keaton depended on The Flash's success at the box office, similar to the impressive opening weekend performance of The Batman.
I was optimistic about its performance, as I had heard from Michael Uslan's child that if the movie could replicate the success of The Batman, which opened to a staggering $130 million, there are plans to produce a Batman Beyond installment featuring Michael Keaton. This revelation heightened my anticipation, and I found myself fervently wishing for the movie to achieve significant financial success.
All Of Warner Bros.’ Cancelled Plans With Keaton’s Batman Explained
With Keaton's departure from the Batman Beyond movie, it marks another failed attempt in a series of discarded DC plans involving the actor, following his involvement in The Flash. Initially, Keaton was set to reprise his role as Batman in The Flash, with the intention of positioning him as the new primary Caped Crusader in the DCEU, effectively replacing Ben Affleck's portrayal of the character. Early reports suggested that Keaton's Batman would have played a similar role to Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Keaton's involvement in the Batgirl movie, alongside Leslie Grace, was an additional DCEU project for him. The events of The Flash were meant to directly lead into Batgirl, serving as an origin story for Barbara Gordon in the reimagined DCEU. Unfortunately, despite completing principal photography, Warner Bros. Discovery infamously canceled the Batgirl movie, depriving the world of another opportunity to see Keaton as Batman.
Although Batman Beyond may not come to fruition in the DCEU, DC Studios still has the option to pursue it as an Elseworlds project. This would allow Keaton to reprise his role as Bruce and mentor Terry McGinnis in a separate continuity, without conflicting with James Gunn's plans for the DC Universe. Hopefully, despite the setback of The Flash, a live-action Batman Beyond project will eventually materialize in some form or another.
