Summary
Former yakuza member criticizes Avengers: Endgame's Ronin fight scene, giving it a zero rating for real-life accuracy.
The Hawkeye show by Marvel revives the underused Ronin arc from Endgame, compensating for its disappointing portrayal in the movie. The future remains uncertain regarding whether or not Hawkeye's Ronin persona will make a comeback, but the potential for captivating narratives exists.
A former member of the yakuza, Tatsuya Shindo, criticized the Ronin fight scene in Japan from Avengers: Endgame. Clint Barton, who had taken on the identity of Ronin after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, sought revenge for the loss of his family by targeting the yakuza in Japan. Shindo expressed his disappointment with the fight scene's real-life accuracy, rating it as zero. Watch the video below for more details.
Shindo was deeply impressed by Sanada's portrayal of a yakuza. His only concern was the authenticity of the sword fight between him and Ronin, as he believed it to be unrealistically portrayed in real life. He commented:
Hiroyuki Sanada, the actor in this film, truly exudes the essence of a yakuza. If a yakuza appears weak or vulnerable, it's game over. Strength is key for their survival. A mere glance is all it takes for one yakuza to recognize another. The eyes of a yakuza possess a distinctiveness. They are sharp and astute, enveloping his entire being with an undeniable air.
So, in my gang, some individuals indeed used swords to commit murders like that. However, sword fights of this nature no longer occur. Nowadays, pistols are the weapon of choice. The depiction lacks any sense of realism.
How Marvel's Hawkeye Show Redeemed Endgame's Most Underused Alter-Ego
Avengers: Endgame undeniably failed to do justice to Hawkeye's Ronin arc. Prior to the film, this aspect stood out as one of the most intriguing elements of the storyline, with MCU architect Kevin Feige suggesting that it would justify Barton's absence in Avengers: Infinity War. Fortunately, Marvel Studios managed to redeem itself in the handling of Ronin's narrative. Several years after retiring his secret identity, the past came back to haunt him through the events of Hawkeye. It all began when Kate Bishop stumbled upon the Ronin suit and made the decision to don it. Unintentionally, this action resurrected the merciless assassin, serving as a warning to his enemies that he had returned.
The inclusion of Ronin in Disney+'s Hawkeye provided Marvel Studios with an opportunity to redeem the character's underwhelming portrayal in Avengers: Endgame. In retrospect, the blame cannot solely be placed on the 2019 film, as it was already packed with content and unable to fully explore the Ronin storyline from Marvel Comics. Jeremy Renner's subsequent TV show failed to fully adapt this narrative as well, but did offer some further exploration.
It is uncertain whether or not Ronin will make a return in future iterations of Hawkeye. Following Avengers: Endgame, it was evident that Barton had no desire to revisit his role as the ruthless samurai, a sentiment that was reinforced in his show. However, there are still many intriguing storylines that could be explored with this alter-ego at the forefront, making it possible for Marvel Studios to reintroduce it in the future.
