Highlights
In the movie "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," it is revealed that Peggy Carter has children and Steve Rogers is their father.
The writers of "Avengers: Endgame" have confirmed that Peggy's children are indeed fathered by Steve, and it is highly probable that they possess super soldier DNA.
Although Steve's children have not made an appearance in the MCU, in parallel dimensions, he is known to have a son named James Rogers and a daughter named Sarah, both of whom inherit his extraordinary superpowers.
Years have passed since Captain America, in Avengers: Endgame, returned the Infinity Stones to their rightful places in time and found his happiness. It was revealed that Peggy Carter, whom Cap had saved during World War II, had married someone else and had children. Given this revelation and the ending of Endgame, fans had valid questions.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), we have witnessed Wanda and Vision raising kids in the Disney Plus series WandaVision, as well as Hawkeye harboring a secret family in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It only seems fitting that Cap, the epitome of wholesomeness and tradition among the Avengers, would have his own family of super soldiers who would carry on his legacy.
Peggy's Children Mentioned in The Winter Soldier
Fans eagerly awaited the release of The Winter Soldier in theaters, hoping to find out if Peggy was still a part of the story. Their curiosity was satisfied early on in the film when Steve paid her a visit, revealing that it was a regular occurrence for him. This visit also shed light on the fact that Peggy had lived a fulfilling life after Cap was frozen.
While conversing with Steve, the camera pans away from Peggy, allowing the audience a glimpse of her family photos. Amongst these pictures are ones showing Peggy with her children, a boy and a girl. However, the identity of the children's father and Peggy's husband is never revealed. This left some fans disappointed, as they had hoped to see Peggy and Steve together. It was not because they believed Peggy should never move on from Steve, as that would be unrealistic. Rather, fans simply wanted to witness their beloved characters sharing a future. Interestingly, in the comics, Captain America eventually forms a romantic relationship with Sharon, who happens to be Peggy's niece. The world of comics can be quite peculiar.
The movie attempts to rectify this odd entanglement by closing a loop and sending Steve back in time to have his dance with his gal, giving Steve his happily ever after.
Was Steve the Father of Peggy's Kids?
There were numerous unresolved inquiries that arose when Cap made the decision to reunite with Peggy and embrace a normal existence. Did this choice result in an alternate timeline? Where did the TVA factor into all of this? Could Steve have been the mysterious husband mentioned by Peggy in Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Fortunately, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the writers of Endgame, shed some light on these uncertainties in 2019.
McFeely told The Hollywood Reporter:
It was always our intention that he was the father of those two children. But again, there are time travel loopholes for that.
Markus went on to add:
It does introduce the idea that there are two children who have somewhat super soldier DNA.
Who are Steve's Kids in Other Media?
This raises additional questions. Considering the age of Captain America, as seen in Endgame when he returns and passes his shield to Sam, it can be inferred that his children would be adults. If Steve had passed on any super soldier DNA, it is likely that they would be actively involved in fighting for justice. Both Steve and Peggy had a strong sense of duty, undoubtedly instilled in their offspring. Although Marvel has not indicated any projects involving the children of Steve Rogers (unless they appear in Captain America 4: New World Order), it is probable that the creative minds behind the franchise decided the Rogers children chose to lead ordinary lives. Perhaps they contribute to the betterment of the world by working for a non-profit organization.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it is uncertain whether Steve Rogers has children. However, in alternate universes, he does have offspring. Nevertheless, Peggy is not their mother in any of these realities. Unlike the MCU, Captain America never had the opportunity to dance with her. One thing is clear, though: Steve Rogers' children are surely not employed by a non-profit organization.
James Rogers, named after Cap's loyal friend Bucky, made his debut in the 2008 film "Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow," where the offspring of the Avengers stepped up to protect Earth. James inherited all the incredible abilities of his father thanks to the super soldier DNA. Regrettably, Steve never had the opportunity to raise his son as he perished in a battle against Ultron. Ultron, after defeating the original Captain America, took possession of the vibranium shield. Thankfully, Tony Stark survived and safeguarded the children. Eventually, he created a unique energy shield for James. Fans of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." saw Coulson utilize a similar device in the show's third season.
In contrast to James, who doesn't exist in the comic books, Steve's daughter Sarah does. In a 1998 issue of "What If...," Captain America and other Marvel heroes remained on Battleworld and agreed to a ceasefire, raising their own families. In an unexpected turn of events, Captain America forged a relationship with Rogue from the X-Men and they had a child. This version of Rogue, known as Carol, is notably different from her 616 counterpart, as she possesses the ability to conceive a child. When your mutant power involves draining a person's life energy upon touch, intimacy becomes quite complex.
Sarah inherits her mother's extraordinary powers of super strength, flight, and incredible resilience. Yet, it is her beloved father who instills in her a set of unwavering morals and principles. As fate leads her and a group of other gifted adolescents into a dimension overrun by Sentinels, Sarah steadfastly remains determined to stay until harmony is restored to the world, even if it means sacrificing her own life. Her unwavering resolve mirrors the unyielding spirit of Steve Rogers, best encapsulated by his timeless mantra, "I can do this all day."
