Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One stars Rebecca Ferguson and Simon Pegg dismiss the notion that the balcony scene between Ethan and Ilsa in the latest installment of the action franchise is romantic. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film follows Tom Cruise's superspy as he confronts a new AI threat with the help of his loyal team. Despite hints of a romantic connection between Ethan and Ilsa, including a balcony embrace in Venice, Ferguson and Pegg clarify in a recent interview with Insider that their characters' dynamic is not meant to be romantic. Pegg further emphasizes that this is not the typical style of the franchise. See their comments below.
Ferguson stated that she has never spoken to Tom and they have never deeply examined their relationship. According to her, what they have is what they work with, without any hidden intention to create a romantic couple. They consider themselves professionals who love and support each other. In life, there are various opportunities, but they are also selfish and deeply love each other. Ferguson believes that if the focus is taken off their genders, a similar dynamic can be seen between Benji and Tom. She mentions a kissing scene between Ethan and Isla in Mission: Impossible - Fallout that was cut, jokingly stating that she enjoyed kissing Tom and the scene had to be removed.
Pegg expressed the belief that a scene of Benji and Ethan cuddling on the balcony could have been included. However, he also felt that transforming their relationship into a traditional romance would undermine the unconventional nature of the film.
Does Mission: Impossible Need Romance?
While earlier films in the franchise delved into Ethan's romantic life, recent installments have focused less on love interests. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation introduces Ilsa, and there is an intriguing flirtation between her and Ethan, but it never progresses beyond that. Mission: Impossible – Fallout includes a deleted scene that explores their romantic chemistry in a more obvious manner, but it was ultimately removed for a specific reason.
McQuarrie and Cruise have perfected their formula for the Mission: Impossible franchise, focusing on death-defying stunts and exhilarating action. The latest entries have received positive reviews, indicating the success of this approach. The playful dynamics between characters add depth and entertainment on-screen. However, if any team members were to become romantically involved, it could disrupt the entire synergy of Ethan's team.
Additionally, as Mission: Impossible - Fallout explicitly illustrates, Ethan's sole focus is on saving the world, making romantic entanglements distractions that may even pose potential dangers. While Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One subtly showcases the progression of Ethan and Ilsa's relationship, these scenes were not meant to tease larger love story subplots – and that's perfectly alright.
