Sunrise, the production studio behind Cowboy Bebop, has announced that they will be bringing back their cult classic series ZEGAPAIN. The original series, which helped create the resurgence of the mech anime genre, aired in 2006. The studio revealed in a post on the official ZEGAPAIN Project Reunion site on August 31, 2023, that they have already begun working on a sequel series titled Alto Moda. This new show will introduce a new force within the ZEGAPAIN universe. Unfortunately, no further details were provided regarding the story, release date, or number of episodes.
The House Cowboy Bebop Helped Build
Sunrise Studio established itself as a prominent anime studio with its cool and stylish series Cowboy Bebop, which has had a significant impact on the world of anime, television, and movies. This success solidified Sunrise's position as one of the top anime studios globally and made it the preferred choice for creating groundbreaking shows that defy the conventions of traditional anime.
Despite its reputation for innovation, Sunrise initially gained experience by producing mech anime and has continued to be one of the most prolific studios in this genre. It can be argued that without Sunrise and the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, the popularity of mech anime might never have reached its current heights. By producing ZEGAPOINT, a mech anime that incorporates a creative twist, Sunrise stays true to its culture, history, and tradition.
ZEGAPAIN Is a Mech Anime With a Twist
ZEGAPAIN tells the story of Kyo Sogoru, a student, and his friend Ryoko Kaminagi, as they navigate school, relationships, and family. One day, while swimming, Kyo meets a mysterious girl named Shizuno Misaka. Intrigued by her, he befriends her, only to discover that she comes from another dimension.
Misaka reveals to Kyo that her dimension is under threat by alien forces. Believing that Kyo possesses the power to lead an army and defeat the aliens, she persuades him to help her. Reluctantly, Kyo agrees, inadvertently involving Ryoko in the dangerous mission. Thus begins an extraordinary adventure that forces Kyo to question his reality and contemplate the true nature of his experiences.
Alongside the announcement of the Alto Mode sequel anime, the ZEGAPAIN Project Reunion has also revealed various side projects leading up to the highly anticipated premiere of the new anime. Starting from October 1, 2023, and continuing every Sunday afterwards, the original 2006 ZEGAPAIN anime series will be aired again on Tokyo MX station, ZEGAPAIN ADP. Additionally, the 2016 animated film, which serves as a prequel to the anime, will be re-released. Undoubtedly, studio Sunrise is going above and beyond to ensure the success of the upcoming ZEGAPAIN series.
