What is the story of Fire Punch?

In a post-apocalyptic world enduring an Ice Age, humanity shows little compassion for each other. The protagonist, Agni, possesses powerful regenerating abilities known as "Blessings." Agni is on a mission for revenge after his sister's death, and wants to fulfill her wish for a romantic relationship. However, a conflict leaves him permanently on fire, enduring constant pain until he becomes accustomed to it. Along his journey, Agni encounters unexpected allies: Sun, a boy with electric powers, and Togata, a deranged cinephile with reasonable regenerative abilities who wants Agni to star in their film. Agni also comes across a girl named Judah, who bears a striking resemblance to his late sister, leading him to believe she is actually her.

The only functioning society is a tyrannical one, where those with special abilities are either forced to serve in the military or imprisoned to power the city. The ruling organization manipulates the population by using religion to blame an "Ice Witch" for causing the Ice Age, uniting them against a common enemy. However, when the truth is revealed, none can survive Agni's wrath as everything burns down upon his arrival.

In reality, the Ice Witch is attempting to restore life to the planet by re-heating the Earth using a giant tree, hoping to restart society and allow it to develop naturally. Her ultimate goal is to watch more Star Wars movies, as the latest one was canceled due to the impending disaster. Unbelievably, this is all written on the page.

Continuing forward, Agni attracts followers, including some peculiar individuals, who view him as divine and establish a religion in his honor. Meanwhile, Judah suffers amnesia and is taken in by Agni, who renames her ‘Luna’ in memory of his late sister after avenging her death. As Luna begins to regain her memories during a conflict, she intentionally causes harm to Agni's mind in order to erase his recollection of past events, ultimately sacrificing herself to the tree to restore balance to the world.

Agni, who suffers from amnesia, is given the name Sun in honor of his late friend and disciple. He lives in a seemingly comfortable world, with his abilities preventing him from aging. As conflict starts to arise again, Sun is offered a suicide pill as a way out. However, after watching some surviving footage of his previous life as Agni, he chooses to refuse the pill and outlives the world.

For those with the blessing of regeneration, time is not a concern. As the universe ages and dies, Sun and Luna are finally reunited among the stars. If you're interested in Fire Punch, we recommend picking up a copy today. With only eight volumes, it's a short manga that is sure to be intriguing.

What does Fire Punch mean?

The underlying message of Fire Punch goes beyond emotional turmoil and confusion, urging one to "Live." Agni, constantly saved from the brink of death by those around him, is repeatedly reminded to keep living. Even if survival is the most basic motivation, it is still preferable to the alternative. This theme is echoed in Chainsaw Man, emphasizing the importance of gratitude and caution in choosing who to trust.

Agni's shifting purpose serves as a reminder to reevaluate our own goals for our own well-being, shifting from seeking revenge to protecting a loved one, even in a state of disorientation that blurs the line between reality and delusion. Despite the overwhelming challenges, there is always a reason to persevere - the key is to endure the present state and keep living.

The manga Fire Punch is rich with Indian imagery, such as the use of the name Agni, the fire god in Hinduism, and its frozen India setting. The story is also seen as a creative retelling of the Sun and Moon's chase across the sky. Despite its seemingly light title, Fire Punch is filled with emotional brutality and surreal, almost parody-like imagery that may desensitize readers to the horrific events, while still managing to find humor in the absurdity of the serious situations.

The characters' absurd actions and motivations may be a way for them to cope with living in a frozen world where everything is slowly dying, with no hope in sight and no effort from those in power. In this context, it is worth embracing an absurd behavior if it brings comfort by narrowing your world to a sole purpose.
