The Barbie movie featured a joke about Margot Robbie and Sex Education star Emma Mackey's uncanny resemblance. The online discourse and memes surrounding their similar appearances have made it challenging to distinguish between them. This comparison extended beyond the online world when Mackey was cast in the film Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, where both Mackey and Robbie portrayed distinct versions of the title character.
During an interview with BuzzFeed Celeb, Robbie shared the story of how Mackey came to be cast in the Barbie movie. She also mentioned a joke pertaining to their resemblance that was initially planned for the film but ultimately removed, along with discussing the impact their similar looks have had on their interactions with fans in real life. Read Robbie's comments below:
Why There Are Multiple Barbies In The Barbie Movie
For years, people have been telling me that I bear a striking resemblance to Emma Mackey, the actress from Sex Education. In fact, my friend Greta and I even thought it would be amusing to portray ourselves as Barbie dolls in a movie, capitalizing on our supposed similarity. However, once we dressed up and saw ourselves side by side, we realized that the resemblance wasn't as strong as we initially thought. So, we decided to skip the joke in the film. Nevertheless, whenever someone approaches me and compliments my performance in Sex Education, I graciously express my gratitude.
Multiple versions of Barbie and Ken will be featured in the upcoming movie, even though Robbie is playing the main version of Barbie and Ryan Gosling is playing the main version of Ken. Alongside Robbie and Mackey, a variety of actors including Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, and Hari Nef will portray the diverse Barbies. Similarly, other actors such as Michael Cera, Simu Liu, John Cena, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Chris Evans' brother Scott Evans will be portraying different versions of Ken.
Robbie agreed to be a part of the Barbie film because she wanted to showcase the diverse range of Barbie dolls throughout the years. This highlights the fact that women come in different personalities, appearances, and with different goals. It would be limiting and misleading to only feature one version of Barbie, as it may imply that there is only one acceptable way to act or look. The approach of showcasing various versions of Barbie, such as McKinnon's Weird Barbie, Rae's President Barbie, and Lipa's Mermaid Barbie, has already proven successful through the promotion of posters and trailers.
While all the Barbies and Kens may look different and have unique personality traits, there are still certain expectations and conventions they are expected to adhere to. However, when Robbie's Barbie starts questioning and deviating from these conventions, she leaves Barbie Land and ventures into the real world. This could be seen as a thought-provoking commentary on how diversity is often portrayed, with certain media and businesses only embracing it when it aligns with their established norms. When the movie Barbie is released, each version of the doll brought to life, including Robbie and Mackey, can offer meaningful and entertaining ways to address these issues.
