The poisonous potato in Minecraft is in desperate need of attention from Mojang for a future update. Despite being added early on, it serves only one purpose as consumable food for players, similar to rotten flesh. However, even rotten flesh has more utility, such as trading with villagers or healing and breeding wolves. The poisonous potato, on the other hand, lacks any significant purpose besides completing achievements. While fans may argue that other items like the spyglass or golden hoe are just as useless, the poisonous potato is widely considered to be the frontrunner in this regard. This ranking contradicts the fact that players can obtain poisonous potatoes with minimal chances from potato crops or shipwreck chests, suggesting their value despite their lack of practicality. It is therefore crucial for the poisonous potato to be redeemed in a future Minecraft update.
The Problem With Minecraft's Poisonous Potatoes
The poisonous potato in Minecraft distinguishes itself from other food items due to its unique properties. Unlike other crops, it is the only one that yields a "bad" alternative. While this could be seen as an attempt by Mojang to add realism to farming, it seems unlikely, as poisonous potatoes are the only crop affected by this. Additionally, these potatoes cannot be composted, further diminishing their value.
Although poisonous potatoes are similar to rotten flesh in terms of satisfying hunger in dire situations, they lack the benefit of being tradable with villager farmers. Consequently, players are unlikely to consume poisonous potatoes, except when aiming for Minecraft's "A Balanced Diet" achievement. Not only do these potatoes have negative effects, but they are also scarce.
Apart from being obtained through farming, poisonous potatoes can occasionally be found in shipwreck chests, possibly serving as a nod to the historical transportation and introduction of real-world potatoes to other countries by boat. This places poisonous potatoes in the same category as other valuable loot, such as enchanted leather armor or TNT. Therefore, players who go through the trouble of plundering shipwrecks may have a high chance of being rewarded with one of Minecraft's most worthless items.
Poisonous Potatoes Could Still Be Redeemed
Despite their name implying possible use in combat or potion-brewing, poisonous potatoes have no such functionality. They can only be used as a prank, leaving them in friends' chests. However, this suggests that Mojang could explore new uses for poisonous potatoes. They could potentially be used in potion-brewing or crafting poisoned meals, or their negative effects could be reversed to provide beneficial effects for players who put in the effort.
Alternatively, if not used for offensive purposes, poisonous potatoes could be redesigned to have passive benefits. Currently, players can only breed villagers by giving them food, while piglins cannot be bred at all. Introducing poisonous potatoes as a Nether-specific food for piglins could help create piglin villages and provide Mojang with an opportunity to expand gameplay. At the very least, if Mojang does not make any significant changes to the use of poisonous potatoes, they should allow players to trade them with villagers or compost them like rotten flesh.
Minecraft is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
