Rivalries are uncommon in the video game industry, but there have been notable cases over the past few decades. One of the earliest gaming rivalries was between Nintendo and Sega, specifically their mascots Mario and Sonic. In the 2000s, tensions rose between Guitar Hero and Rock Band, GTA and Saints Row, and Forza and Gran Turismo. In the 2010s, the two major FPS franchises Battlefield and Call of Duty competed against each other. While the 2020s have been relatively peaceful, a minor rivalry has emerged between Dying Light 2 and Dead Island 2.
Dying Light 2, released in February 2022, initially dominated the zombie gaming market. However, in August 2022, Dead Island 2 unexpectedly made a comeback after being dormant for nearly a decade, and it finally became available for purchase earlier this year. Both games have similarities, but they also have notable differences, particularly in how they handle post-launch content.
How Dying Light 2 and Dead Island 2's Post-Launch Approach Differs
Since its release in April of this year, Dead Island 2 has only introduced a few post-launch content drops, primarily consisting of cosmetic skins. The initial update, called the Premium Character Packs, provided new outfits for each playable character. The subsequent update introduced the "Til Dawn" Collection, featuring more cosmetic skins that can be unlocked through gameplay milestones.
In addition to the existing cosmetic DLCs, Dead Island 2 has several upcoming updates in the pipeline. The first of these updates, named Haus, will introduce a new story expansion and a new set of skins called the "From Dusk" Collection. This pack is expected to be released in Q4 of this year, most likely in November or December. The second update on the roadmap, SOLA Festival, will bring another story expansion to the game. Both of these story DLCs will be exclusively available through Dead Island 2's Expansion Pass.
Dying Light 2, which was released in February 2022, has had ample time to provide post-launch content. Initially, it followed a similar approach to Dead Island 2 by offering cosmetic packs that could be purchased or earned within the game. However, over the past year, Dying Light 2's post-launch support has become more extensive.
Prior to its release, Techland, the developer of Dying Light 2, announced plans to support the game for at least five years through updates, effectively turning it into a live-service game. As a result, Techland has consistently updated the game, incorporating small adjustments, as well as significant expansions such as new storylines, side missions, enemy variations, additional weapons, and a revamped currency and rewards system for bounty missions. Furthermore, there are numerous upcoming post-launch updates planned. In contrast to Dead Island 2, which is expected to conclude after two story expansions, it appears that Dying Light 2 will continue to release new content, contingent upon an active player base.
Dying Light 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
