Christopher Nolan has come forward to advocate for artificial intelligence amidst the industry's ongoing concerns about the technology. Renowned for his work as a writer and director on films such as The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, Tenet, and the upcoming Oppenheimer, Nolan's creations not only captivate audiences with their stunning visuals but also delve into intricate and thought-provoking concepts.
During a conversation with Wired, Nolan expressed his views on the recent progress in artificial intelligence. Despite the industry's apprehension, the director stood up in defense of the technology. Take a look at his remarks below:
The growth of AI in the realm of weapons systems and the resulting challenges it presents has been evident for many years. However, only a few journalists took the initiative to address this issue. Surprisingly, the emergence of a chatbot capable of writing articles for local newspapers has suddenly sparked a crisis. By accepting the notion that AI possesses omnipotent abilities, we are essentially absolving individuals of their responsibility for their actions, whether in military or socioeconomic contexts. The greatest peril posed by AI lies in the tendency to attribute godlike qualities to it, thus relieving ourselves of accountability. Though I am uncertain of the mythological origins of this phenomenon, throughout history humans have displayed a propensity for creating false idols and claiming godlike powers due to our own creations. I believe that AI can still serve as a powerful tool for humanity, and I am optimistic about its potential. However, it is crucial that we perceive AI as a tool, recognizing that the individual wielding it must bear the responsibility for its use. If we grant AI the legal status of a human being, as we have done with corporations at some point, we will undoubtedly encounter significant challenges.
