Highlights
Diablo 4's Season 1 has stirred controversy and left players dissatisfied due to its seasonal update and live-service aspects. To ensure the success of future Diablo 4 seasons, it is imperative to maintain the strength of player classes while avoiding an excessive emphasis on grinding in the Diablo world.
Diablo 4's future updates and Battle Pass should prioritize transparent communication with players regarding gameplay changes and improved rewards. It is no secret that Season 1 of Diablo 4 has been met with controversy and dissatisfaction among many players, particularly with regards to the seasonal update and live-service elements of the game. Considering the Diablo series' familiarity with the seasonal content model, the approach taken by Diablo 4 is even more surprising. In light of the prevalent complaints and criticisms surrounding the shortcomings of Season of the Malignant, Blizzard should seize this opportunity to gather and incorporate player feedback while designing future seasons of Diablo 4 and enhancing the overall seasonal experience for players.
Despite the controversy surrounding this season, Blizzard has made efforts to address player concerns, reversing certain gameplay changes and pledging further updates to revert many of the unpopular alterations made in the initial Season 1 update. While Blizzard's mission statement for Diablo 4 going forward is an encouraging sign for future seasons, the developers must still critically evaluate what went wrong with this season in order to enhance upcoming ones. As a live-service game that thrives or fails based on its consistent content updates, Diablo 4 must take the lessons learned from this season very seriously if it is to fulfill the staying power it promised prior to release.
How Blizzard Can Avoid the Pitfalls of Season 1 in Diablo 4’s Season 2
The Season of the Malignant in Diablo 4 got off to a rough start even before its official launch. The recent update that arrived a couple of days before the season kicked off caused quite a controversy. This update not only weakened all classes but also made enemies more powerful, resulting in the game feeling like a tedious slog. Unfortunately, Blizzard's intention to achieve balance between different build types was far from successful. In the future, it would be better for seasonal updates to focus on enhancing builds for underpowered classes like the Sorcerer, rather than bringing down all builds to the same level.
One major point of controversy surrounding Diablo 4's first season is the implementation of its Battle Pass. This topic has already divided the gaming community. Although Diablo 4's Battle Pass only offers cosmetic items, it progresses slowly and surprisingly lacks enough Platinum premium currency to purchase the cheapest items in the game's shop. While the seasonal Battle Pass may not greatly impact the enjoyment of most Diablo 4 players, those who purchase it expect better and more timely rewards from Blizzard.
Aside from gameplay updates and issues with the Battle Pass, one of the most important lessons Blizzard should learn from this first season is the need for greater transparency with players regarding changes to the game. Deep within the controversial update, there were modifications not mentioned in Diablo 4's patch notes, such as the alteration of the title "Predator" to "Enemy" and the change in visibility for the Necromancer's Corpse Explosion skill. Whether these changes are positive or negative, a lack of complete transparency regarding updates sets a poor precedent.
The developers' improved transparency regarding update details is a positive development for Diablo 4. They have already held one Diablo 4 Campfire Chat and have confirmed another one is on the way. Given that Diablo 4's live-service model differs from previous entries, it is expected for there to be some initial challenges. However, it is crucial for Blizzard to learn from the mistakes of this season and make course corrections for Diablo 4's Season 2 in order to ensure the game's longevity.
Diablo 4 is currently playable on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
